Fourteen Franciscan Friars took their places among the 1962 graduates of the University of Dayton in commencement exercises held at the University last June. The fourteen Friars comprised the third graduation class of Conventual Franciscans to grad- uate from the University of Dayton since the affiliation, in 1956. of Our Lady of Carey Semi- nary with the Arts curriculum of the University of Dayton. Franciscan Friars of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual prepare for apostolate careers in the Priesthood and Brotherhood in fields of foreign and home missions, preaching, college and high school teaching, parishes, hospital and prison chaplaincies, armed forces, radio and television. Our Lady of Carey Seminary is the college division of the seminary system of the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Consolation. Prior to the college years at Carey, the Friars spend four years of intensified high school training at Mt. St. Francis Seminary in southern Indiana, and one year of extensive religious training at St. Anthony Novitiate, Auburn, Indiana. Upon graduation from the University of Dayton and the reception of the degree of Bachelor of Arts, the majority of the Friars are sent to Assumption Seminary, Chaska, Minnesota, where they pursue four years of study in Theology, after which they receive the degree of Master of Arts and are ordained to the priesthood. Some of the Friars, however, take their theological studies in Europe, either in Rome at the Collegio Serafico, the International College of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, or in Fribourg, Switzerland, at the International Catholic Univer- sity of Fribourg, or in Louvain. Belgium. at the University of Louvain. The present enrollment in the school of Philosophy of Our Lady of Carey Seminary is forty- four. In addition to their normal courses of study fthe Friars major in Philosophy and minor in Education and Historyl there are numerous other extra-curricular activities. Speech and Drama organization is devoted to the production and dissemination of good dram-a and musical entertainment. During the past several years Speech and Drama has been active in presenting plays and other entertainment for the benefit of many high schools and civic groups in Ohio. The Radio Corps, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission, operates an amateur radio station from the seminary premises and at the present time is making preparations for the installation of a commercial FM station. As field experience in conjunction with the Education department, the Friars spend some time each weekend teaching Christian Doctrine courses to many of the area children. The Language Institute is comprised of individuals wishing to group together during the summer months and other free periods during the scholastic year to learn various foreign lan- guages through group study. At the present time the Language Institute is engaged in the study of Advanced Latin, Advanced French, Spanish, Italian, and German. In the Music Department of the Seminary are the Friars Choir, the Glee Club, and a small orchestra. The Friars Choir has become increasingly in demand for public appearances in con- junction with religious and civic events as well as for radio and television work. Carey, Ohio, is the home of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation. Each year tens of thousands of pilgrims come to visit the Shrine. especially during the summer months. From a close spiritual and geographical association with the Shrine, the Friars of Our Lady of Carey College provide many services for the Shrine and its pilgrims. A fully equipped Photography Department provides material for public relations purposes, art work, and portrait work. Founded in 1936, Our Lady of Carey Seminary celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1961. With the notable progress that has come through its affiliation with the University of Dayton, the Seminary looks forward to even greater progress in the years to come.
