Better Understanding of Trends in Society Meetings, dinners, speakers and discussions The University of Dayton Sociology Club, Sig- ma Sigma Sigma, organized in 1946 under the guidance of Dr. Edward A. Huth, discussed various problems of modern society for the purpose of pro- moting cooperative group living through an under- standing and appreciation of recent trends in social thought. Prominent speakers from the city oi Dayton, representing state and federal government agencies, addressed the sociologists on several occasions. Early in February, 1950, the members themselves discussed the important sociological happenings of the first half of the twentieth century. Highlighting the year's activities were two dinners-one held during the Christmas season, the other in late spring. Meetings were held fortnightly in the auditorium of the Albert Emmanuel Library. Under the capable leadership of: Ralph Moore, president: Lester Bohman, vice-president: Mar lane Dugan, secretary: Sam Rosta, treasurer: and Mary Io Huth, program chairman, an active social year was enjoyed. Second row-George Hammond, George Schlagbaum, George Springer, Bob Alberts, Walter Baker, Walter Rudick, Current Geologic Problems Considered Vital Papers, films, discussions and tours Outside session with a rock The objective of the University of Dayton's Geology Club is to broaden the members' knowl- edge by the discussion of current geologic problems not ordinarily treated in the undergraduate text courses. Activities of the year included the presentation of a number of student papers, the showing of films and slides, and informal discussions on various geologic topics. Also during the year the club trav- eled to Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati to attend lectures given by the Society of Sigma Xi and the A. A. P. G. George H. Springer, Professor of Geology, aided in all activities and served as moderator of the group. Hospital Ward parties and discussions Red Cross members on the go The Red Cross College Unit at the University of Dayton sponsored numerous activities at Veterans Administration Hospital. Six Ward parties were given throughout the year for company eighteen, which the unit has adopted. Students from the ath- letic department showed football and basketball movies for the patients. The Debate Society was active with discussion panels at Brown Hospital for T. B. patients. A new field of Weekly service was opened in neuro-psychiatric ward of V. A. hospital. This pro- vided practical experience for students in sociology classes. These volunteers accompanied patients attending movies held every Monday night.
