The History of the School of Nursing and Health Modern nursing in Cincinnati dates its beginning from the late eighties. It is a matter of no small pride to the School of Nursing and Health that in it the seed of this movement had its First growth. and that the early history of the school and the early history of the movement are identical. The Society of the Cincinnati Training School for Nurses was organized in 1888 by a group of broadt-minded, liberal spirited Cincinnati women. whose. special aim was to offer educational opportunities to women by opening up this new professional field, and at the same time to give the patients at the City Hespital better nursing care; whose general aim was to work for the larger good of the community by providing the services of scientiiically educated nurses. Throughout all time the history of pioneer movements and reform has been one of stress and obstacles. In this respect the Cincinnati Training School for Nurses was no exeeptinn. Organized by the Society of the Cincinnati Training School for Nursest it began its career in the Cincinnati Hospital in 1889. The school continued under the direction of the Society until january 1893; at this time the hospital established a school under its direct management and the name was changed to the Cincinnati Hospital Training School for Nurses. Under this name the school was operated for twenty years. The long list of nurses. with their splendid records. who graduated from the sr'hnnl during this periud, predicates to those women who made up the Society of the Cincinnati Training School for Nurses a great samenese of principles and methods, and a rich Vision for the future. In 1914 with the opening of the new Cincinnati General Hospitalt Miss Laura R. Logan was appointed Superintendent of Nurses and 0f the Training School. the name of which was at that time Changed fmm the Cincinnati H057 pital Training School for Nurses to the School of Nursing and Health of the Cincinnati General Hospital. Miss Logan immediately saw the wonderful possibilities of the schuoi, associated as it was with a great municipal hospital and with a municipal university at its very door. She accepted the position with the understanding that every possible effort would be made to establish the school as part of the University. It is clue chiefly to Miss Logan's untiring perserverance that the School of Nursing and Health in June 1916 was made a department of the College of Medicine of the University of Cincinnati. Upon its incorporation as a uni- versity school the matriculation requirements automatically became the same as that of all other colleges of the University. The curriculum was thoroughly revised and rearranged. The block schedule system with alternate periods of intensive co-operative nursing practice and class-room instruction was introduced.
