Joseph RansohoifuThe Teacher MONG men there are many who possess much knowledge. There are fewer who have great learning. But there are fewest of those, who having both wisdom and learning, have the gift of imparting truth to others. It was to this latter class of the elect that Joseph Ransohoff belonged. His mind was a storehouse of treasure trove on which he could draw at will. The greatness of his teaching lay not only, perhaps not chiefly. in his wonderful fund of information. He had the type of cyclopedic mind which Classified and arranged his facts, so that they could come forth in orderly array. Himself a profound student, he sensed the needs of his pupils, and in his mar- velous faculty of elucidation he correlated and adjusted the known facts to each special problem before him. The charm of his voice, the purity of his diction, the wide range of his knowledge, the secure and ready marshalling of his facts all combined to make his lectures a delight. To have had him as a teacher of anatomy was a rare privilege to have been present at his clinical bedside demonstrations was an inspiration. Here was a man with an analytical east of mind, a tireless seeker after medical truth, a profound student always. What he read he remembered, what he had seen, he could recall. And so, in the later years of his life, when he was able to draw on a rich fund of knowledge, when he could speak from the wisdom of his great experience. his lectures and demonstrations were models of medical exposition. He was a man deeply interested in the history of his science and his lectures derived added value from his illuminating digressions into medical history. All omnivorous reader, the catholicity of his taste led him to the exploration of many scientific by-ways. And his illustrations of medical points by analogies from sister sciences added not a little to the value of his demonstrations-added much to the delight of his auditors. To all of this he added one other great factor. For he was an idealist in his teaching: he strove for the truth himself as he tried to give it to his students. His enthusiasm about his teaching. his College, his students was boundless. In his latter days. racked with pain, suFfering the mental distress which must come to a medical mind so well trained as his, he retained ever the hope that he might recover at least far enough to take up again the work with his beloved students. Of his work as a surgeon this is not the place to speak. A pioneer in many Fields of surgical endeavor. skillful, resourceful. he has enriched surgical literature In many ways. And yet it is certain that it is not because of his surgical ability alone, that he will be remembered. For it was as a teacher that he was without a peer. To thosesand their number is legionsto whom he was wise guide, faithful mentor and inspiring teacher. there is the heritage of his wonderful example. And it will endure. More than this need no man ask. ALFRED FRIEDLANDER. Page One Hundred
