The establishment of the University of Cincinnati on a secure base became pos- sible in 1858 through the munificent bequest of Charles Mclvlicken to the city for this purpose. In 1875, classes began on the McMicken estate, the site designated in the Will. Instruction was free to resi- dents of Cincinnati. ln 1895. the Uni- versity moved to its present location in Burnet Woods. Stressing the notion of a municipal university, President Charles Dabney conceived the school as a direct- ing force in community life. Under his leadership, eighteen acres of land, five colleges and several departments were added.
