Charles L. McMic-ken is considered the University's greatest benefactor. From the beginning, the people of Cin- cinnati were interested in the establish- ment of an institution for collegiate education. In 1819, the Ohio General As- sembly authorized the creation of both the Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio. l'ze into HA Fountain a munificent bequest oorporea 1 of Ete g Z1 tr? V A -'v The municipal university was co-educational from the beginning. The establishment of the University of Cincinnati on a secure base became pos- sible in 1858 through the munificent bequest of Charles Mclvlicken to the city for this purpose. In 1875, classes began on the McMicken estate, the site designated in the Will. Instruction was free to resi- dents of Cincinnati. ln 1895. the Uni- versity moved to its present location in Burnet Woods. Stressing the notion of a municipal university, President Charles Dabney conceived the school as a direct- ing force in community life. Under his leadership, eighteen acres of land, five colleges and several departments were added. A major innovation of the period was the introduction of the co-operative system by Herman Schneider in 1908. -as-14 lpiln The Cin cinnati College located at Foul-th ,md W I l 'I Hut had three grnrliml - l P .
