U df uve role on campus through athletics and organizations. Cultural pursuits dominated the orientation of the first student organizations. The dynamic and youthful quality of the University has been effected through the mobility and activity of its student body. As early as the 1880's, a journal, Belastrasco, was published andfraterni- ties were formed. In 1887, sports and class spirit were given impetus through the first scheduling of both Field Day and Flag Rush. The CINCINNATIAN, first published in 1894, featured Ioe Fry, head janitor, while the Women's Vigilance Committee had a sharp eye on freshman girls. 1894 also marked the appointment of the first football coach and intercol- legiate games. Following World War I, student activities expanded greatly, and the increased interest in athletics led to the creation of the U.C. Band in 1921, while Know Your University was the theme of the first Homecoming in 1923. With the building of the Union in 1936, activities were well underway.
