Ray Dieringer directed the frosh to a line 10-4-1 record, even though he met unexpected pitfalls in his first season as coach of the Bearkittens. A lack of 'book work, cost Dieringer five of his cagers, including star forward Ken Calloway who had averaged better than 18 points in four games. Leading playmaker Jerry Couzins de- parted six games later with a fractured thumb, reducing the bench strength to a single man. In all the confusion, forward Mike Rolf went about rewriting the record book from the days of Oscar Rob- ertson. The high-scoring prep All-American from Muncie, Indiana averaged nearly 30 points for games. He set records in single game scoring, held goals for a single game, and a season mark for total points. Sharing the scoring duties over the latter portion of the sched- ule was Paul Weidner, who came on strong to average 12.2 points an outing. With the hard-fought efforts of four non-scholarship scrappers, Jerry Radtke, Tom Lange, Steve Schweitzer, and Jeff Stienehelfer, the frosh posted a winning record for the season. Record breaker Mike Rolf nres in another 2-pointer The fast-breaking Cojfeyville Ravens charge down court against the Bearkitten defense.
