Student Life is the diference between a university and merely a scattering of brick buildings, grassy lawns, and asphalt parking lots. It is aipervasive influence on the students who are a part of it . . . and each campus is defined as much by its particular atmosphere as by its aca- demic reputation and physical setting. Student life starts with registra- tion lines and stadium throngs, where as part of the masses the student is just another face, it moves through beer parties and bull sessions, lectures and labs, meetings and walks in the woods, and it ends-for about half who begin it-with acap and gown. It is built from cigarettes and calculus, songs and sex, beer and bluebooks, and a hundred other things. But as much as cheering jieldhouse crowds and packed campus dances are intrinsically college -the dynamic interchange of ideas, the fun, and the friendships with smaller groups are more remembered and valued. For here-with ia roommate, over drinks with close friends, with a love, or alone-here the individual begins . . . unique in the campus mosaic.
