TEACHERS College seniors gain experience not o+herwise obtainable by conduc+ing actual classes. Many universities accompany lee- tures with laboratory courses, for it has been recognized that knowl- edge must be demonstrated and used. F ield trips and labs are aca- demic methods to acquire practi- cal knowledge. Cooperative edu- cation is another, in which students alternate studying theory and recent developments in class with using the knowledge on a coop job. Their quality is dependent on the physical plant, the administration, faculty, and students. The curriculum is determined by the administration and the faculty pre- sents it to the students. Possibly the greatest lesson is that there is more to be learned. Education is a preparation for one,s vocation and is a time for experimentation and ques- tioning. Eight dclock lectures may be stimu- lating or boring, but nonetheless, the knowl- edge from them is necessary and meaningful. for advancement of humanity A recent surge in the field of missile and satellite development has created positions for able scientists. Dr. Paul Herget, Cincinnati Observatory director, set up the Institute of Space Sciences at the University as part of UC,s contribution to international research. It is the only one of its kind. Operating as a division of Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Institute offers courses leading to a Master of Science degree in sev- eral fields, as well as Ph.D. work in dynamical astronomy and related subjects.
