The word college is magic; it creates :1 spectrum of thoughts and cmutions. It may he better observed by th'c high school student looking forward, with dreams of ivy and glamour, and by the boys looking back, as they gather in later years and sing of their Alma MaLCr; it is seldom notictrtl by this college man or woman, in the midst of it all. This year is a part of college lif: and, though it is l958 and therefore unique, it; too, will bring dreams of ivy and fond memories. its people, enriched by the growth and knowledge realized from the University, will recall the embellishments, the tradition, the things that can luc expressed. A tollegc year will seem a rcturring pattern; El pleasant mazc of subtle wit, mugs, the quad, bridge and coffee, keys, meetings, books or slide rules, campus On 11 rainy clay; it may be disringuished from other times and plates lay the big O, the radical Ntws Record, the casual acceptance of the butltled buck and tht- League Look. This is tradition, lTJOI'L' so them ivy-Ciwcrc-d walls and shaded walks. The University of Cincinnati. not known as :1 traditional institution, is like all universities and colleges hccausc 0f thcsc cvcnts and herause of its people; for all students an; husitally the same. Each hashis own views 0n the University, the year, and the events, yet he is UUL' of many -;1ll questioning and desiring knowledge. UC is not different, even though it is a college built by its city rather than :1 college whith builds its city; even though its sleek glass expanse reflects a Georgian tower and classic columns and forgets ivy walls. The purpose 0f the University, and of all similar institutions. is mutt- than the development oi the mind, through hooks, or the personality, through activities.
