Schaefer, Castelli, Hanson Adverse early season weather conditions hamper Dana King ' s conditioning work .... a veteran squad begins to shape up nicely, however, under watch ul eyes .... blessed with two fine pitchers King apparently will have a good squad .... Embarking in early April on the longest trip ever taken by a Cincinnati athletic team the ball-tossers point the nose of the bus Southward for a 1500-mile jaunt .... Norris Dam Independents furnish the first opposition and break the soap bubble illusion of a fine hurling staff .... The Tennessee boys shell Evans, Emmerich, and Meier to score a 10-4 victory and the next day hold the ' Cats to a 14-14 tie. On to Georgia Tech and Jake Klavner justifies the faith placed in his pitching by limiting the Yellow Jackets to 4 hits but they make a run while holding the Kingmen to nine goose eggs .... I to but a good effort .... Oscar Ashe leads CIncy with the stick by getting two hits .... To Marysvllle and once more the enemy slug Red and Black pitchers with much gusto .... Meanwhile Clncy can ' t get any runs themselves so two more black marks get chalked up ... . scores 14-11 and 7- 1 .... the trip home .... Off to a belated start in the Buckeye, King again takes his proteges on the road .... this time to Athens and Huntington for games with Ohio U. and Marshall .... again Cincy ' s attack fails and the pitchers discouraged by the lack of hitting behind them fare poorly .... the Bobcats win 7-2 and the hierd, behind fine pitching by Carroll Coleman, silence the Red and Black 6-2 .... Playing at home for the first time the losing streak and the blank in the Buckeye win colunnn broken .... Wesleyan the victim and the score 5-2 .... Klavner pitches in fine form and the ' Cats manage to combine an offense and defense simultaneously .... Prospects for the remainder of the season look rather bright as the team begins to show signs of rounding into good form and starting to play winning ball. enni? As everyone probably knows, he committed suicide on the Rifle Range. By the time Sergeant Zimmerman was procured as coach, matches were about to begin. In spite of this handicap, the team won 7 postal matches while losing 16. Last place was taken, however, in the Allegheny Inter-collegiate League. Much credit is due Captain Malcolm G. A. has brought to the fore numerous Individual activities. The lure of golf, tennis, archery, rifle, and riding has reached many girls to vvhom the regular round of team sports did not appeal. Tennis — scheduled a ladder tournament In the fall and a mixed doubles and singles tournament In the spring. Archery — bov s and arrows shot In the inter-sorority tournament held In both fall and spring. Golf — driver, mashie, putter, — all used to drive that ball In the tournament held at Avon Fields. Rifle — yes, our girls can aim — and what ' s more they can shoot the ole bull ' s eye. An honor team made of the star shots was chosen at the end of the season. Riding — over the hills and dales of the bridle paths at Araconia Farms. The Hockey season was met with the usual enthusiasm this fall. Once more the FHockey field witnessed green-clad figures, sticks In hand, dashing here and there, now blocking — now dribbling — now lunging - — a long shot — and a goal! The eagerness with which each plunged ahead intent upon a goal is evidence of the competition among the classes. This year the Juniors came through with flying colors and were awarded the championship. The girls who excelled in skill and sportsmanship were chosen for the honor team, a procedure which Is customary at the end of every season. On this festive occasion these two classes advised by the upperclassmen vie with each other for supremacy in skill, grace, and strength. This year Aphrodite was chosen as the goddess to reign. Both classes enacted a myth centered around Aphrodite by the dance. n The contests in athletics, torch-racing, discus-throwing, arid hurdling, proved most thrilling both to participants and observers. A genuine test of skill was displayed in the posing of the classic statues which were unusually difficult to portray this year. Perhaps the most spectacular as well as colorful event of the Games was the chariot race. The girls showed unusual skill and were greeted with applauses of great praise. With this brilliant finale the triumpliarit class galloped off exultingly, crowned with the wreath of victory. With everyone, participants, both the triumphant and de- feated, and spectators there lingers a sense o satisfaction in having been a part of one of the most successful Greek Games in the history of the University. f ' ' ■m ' i ne ncmn ti n t %__ _ __ _ , Purdy ■ Gilbert Editor Donald P. Bill Leach was the author of the script. The comedy deviated from the traditional musical comedy ways by subduing the romantic aspects and gag lines to substitute political rallies and ironic situa- tions. Louisiana Sleighride, presented excep- tionally well, executed dancing and music en- hanced by clever lyrics. The verbal tilts of Fineagle and his Republican opponent. Edgar P. Bibby. introduced witty and original dia- logue (especially in the last per- formance). Seawash College, the scene for the Fineagle collegiate activities, fur- nished ample opportunity to satirize hHuey Long ' s Louisiana State College episode when he wished to make a football hero a state official. Opposi- tion to the stage presentation of this Idea was fomented by the sweetheart , %J.V ' Myrrl Elwood Student Dancing Director of the hero, who borrowed Fineagle ' s political technique and elected Bibby. This election ultimately led to the reconciliation of hero and heroine, who up until then had slightly di- vergent ideas as to the honor of be- ing a governor. Women, being tra- ditionally united against men, de- feated Fineagle in his sponsorship of the collegian. Fineagle, upon the chance remark of the governor in- cumbent, reorganized the state so that it was back in Rome. From then on the comedy rollicked to the end, aided by Roman baths a la Fin- eagle ' s brother, hHugo, cellar meet- ings by the Republican Women, and a dance by the Sigma Sigma chorines which would have made Nero re- consider. iMiJiiimElS upive GUIIILID n pm  1(|:in ng)sTi presents WHAT ' S HECUBA...? The tragedy was an ambitious undertaking for the Mummers but they capably produced and presented the play in an exceptionally well finished manner. This was possible due to the excellent players In Mummers from the previous year. In both their choice of material and In their formal gesture to their friends they set a precedent which it will be well to maintain. Stanley Waxman. in the character of Johannes Rosmer, gave a finished performance In a part which would tax the abiiities of a professional actor. His splendid speaking voice and Intelligent Interpretation of his role made his portrayal outstanding. Laurette Flllbrandt, Miss Rebecca West of the play, made an efficient working partner for Waxman. She, too, gave a finished performance in the traditional dramatic sense. Wood row Hunter as Rector KroU, William Licht as Peter Mortensgard, Edward Kuehner as Ulric Brendel, and Dolly Britten as Madame Helseth, all furnished per- formances that completed those of the leads and made the entire play a thoroughly enjoyable show. THE LAST OF MRS. CHENEY The Mummers ' Guild presented in their three-act play of late fall Frederick Lonsdal ' s The Last of Mrs. Cheney . The play revolved around the rather well-known theme of the female accomplice of a sophisticated super-thief. Overwhelmed by her newly discovered honesty, a faint sus- picion of romance and a desire to be the magnanimous lady, she triumphed over her more amusing nature, to the last of Mrs. Cheney. The noteworthy development In the p ' ay was the dramatic construction which led to the last line. And this Is the last of Mrs. Cheney . We can but say. so be it . Needless to say the Mummers ' Guild could use any fairly decent dra- matic vehicle and still be interesting. After all It Is the Mummers as such, rather than the play which they present, that Is of importance. This ts of course no criticism of their dramatic ability. Gene Benedict with a faintly pastel reputation or Stanley Lawwill peering rather dubiously over a dejected moustache would carry even a weak plot situation to a successful climax. Although at times the stage crew apparently took a brief nap between each scene, the scenes were quite well done, with especially effec- tive lighting. The scene of Mrs. Ebley ' s bedroom — now really. We missed the controlled modulations of Stanley Waxman ' s expressive voice and the let them eat grass-ish boomlngs of Wood row Hunter. The players, obviously inexperienced and decidedly self-conscious, were acutely aware that Mother and cousin Mildred were in the audience and by God they would do their best if they had to upstage the whole darn cast. Even Jane Schrader was too ultra . The third act had everyone on the stage except the property man and a radio announcer. It Is doubtful If more tea Is poured on a Mummers ' Friday afternoon . Robert Lindsey In his character of Charles managed in this scene to do his best. Even the lines were helpful. His sideburns were of distinctly the more sardonic type of sideburns, and you know that there is nothing as helpful as sardonic sideburns to reinforce any stage situation which verges on the great reconciliation scene. Jack Marks as Willie Wyn- ton had, it seems, a restless night and at breakfast time he just was not up to It all. In fact the majority of the cast could have prolonged their sleep and left the table less crowded. William Kent handled his part well enough to deserve a bit of lemon with his tea, while Betty Gus tetter and Mary Rose Thuman get an extra spoonful of sugar. Yet, considering everything, even the cigarette between acts has an added zest at a Mummers ' presentation. Which does much to make an enjoyable evening of first nighting. WHAT ' S HECUBA . . . ? The Mummers ' Guild for their spring dramatic presentation offered an original play. What ' s Hecuba . . . ? , by Frank R. Byers of the University Faculty. The tragedy as developed by Mr. Byers revolved around a con- flict suggestive of Strindberg ' s philosophy; namely, that the phenomenon of love also Implies hatred and that the stronger the nature of the par- ticipants the greater will be the conflict. The desire for mastery is the motivating force In the drama. With such excellent material the Mummers more than upheld their high performances of the year and added new lustre to themselves as craftsmen. The acting was uniformly high with each character faithfully filling his ovvn role and also rounding out the roles of the rest of the cast. Muriel Kuyper, In the part of the stepdaughter of Mrs. Maclean and the beloved of Robert Maclean, as a newcomer to the Mummers ' Guild gave a splendid performance. She portrayed her roll sympathetically with in- telligent interpretation of her difficult part. Gene Benedict as Mrs. Mac- Lean handled her role with professional restraint. The character of Mrs. Maclean with Its transition from the haughty domineering type of woman to the penitent, self- reproachful type demanded and found an actress, who performed in a manner usually associated with the legitimate theatre. Miss Benedict ' s splendid speaking voice and natural poise aided her materially in developing her part. Betty Gustetter as the giddy Rose Merrill, along with Dolly Britten as Sarah Hawkes. Introduced a comic note into the play which both served to relieve and Intensify the tragic Macleans. Anatole Klrsanoff, who played the role of the piano tuner, while having had but a minor part, nevertheless, with his Intriguing voice and spontaneity of action made a decided contribution to the cast as a whole. Robert lindsey, who took the character of vindicative Robert Maclean gave a much more finished performance than he did as Charles In The Last of Mrs. Cheney. The role of Robert Maclean was that of the protagonist about whom revolved the conflict between Mrs. Maclean and her step- daughter and Mrs. Maclean and the fanatic Elijah. The passivity with which Robert would hear the confessions of his mother and give no indi- cation of having heard was unusually dramatic. Stanley Waxman, as Elijah, was the external expression of the conflict and remorse in the soul of Mrs. Maclean. Waxman added another laurel to his Mummer ' s fame when he brought the play to an emotional climax with his cries of. Cheater, liar, cheat, at the suicide of Mrs. Maclean, whom he had been trying to subjugate and humiliate. The dramatic setting of the play was carefully done so as to carry out the mood of the tragedy. The lighting done so as to allow shadowed cor- ners and a suggestion of gloom was especially worthy of commendation. Mr. Frank Byers ' What ' s Hecuba ...? ' under the capable direction of John Rose brought to a highly dramatic finish an extremely meritorious season for the Mummers ' Guild. ■ cu u The Cast Helen Norman- Smith Marjora W. Shank Helen L. The lobster (at least a crustacean of some sort) did rather well, although it was boiled. The play was directed by Frank R. Byers, of the English Depart- ment, College of Liberal Arts. His description of the play is more than sufficient. Ladles of the Jury. Uproariously funny — , full of grins, chuckles, and guf- faws from the first to the last curtain . The Green Room presentations by the faculty members are en- joyed by both those of the faculty in the play and the students who are privileged once a year to watch the gods at play . While as yet none of the faculty have been called to Broadway or Holly- wood, another performance such as Ladies of the Jury and ap- pointments to the faculty will be made on the basis of screen tests. presents Whatcha Doin ' Now? The Quadres Society presented in March the musical comedy, Whatcha Doln ' Now? , written by William Jones and Rhoza Walker, members of Quadres. The music and lyrics were written by Don Spencer, who also played the leading role. William Jones and hiaroid Rhodes filled the roles of the male comedy leads. Earnest Finklea and Gladys Bonner as minor leads sang in a particularly pleasing manner. The comedy was a gay affair dealing with an amusing subject in a de- lightfully breezy fashion. The singing and dancing were enthusiastic and gave the feeling of spontaneity. The Cabaret Scene was the best In the show. It was good from the aspect of stage design and appearance and the mod- ernistic dance was the most effective dance In the show, while the music for this dance was catchy to the extreme. The scenery while relatively simple carried out the Idea of the show In an efficient manner. The singing of both the choruses and the leads deserves special mention and praise. The book with clever dialogue and situations fulfilled the Preface In the Play Bill which said, ... a sense of humor can be a valuable asset In many so-called mar- riage problems. Mortar Board Reception November 2, 1934 The Mortar Board Reception inaugurated a new plan of placing school dances in the hands of University organi- zations thus elinninating ne- cessity for class officers. This dance took the place of the traditional Freshman Recep- tion. The Freshmen were in- troduced to the tunes of Johnny Lewis ' s Orchestra. Sigma Sigma, with all due ceremony, summoned the outstanding Junior and Sen- ior men. Miami Pep Dance Thanksgiving Eve The Miami Pep Dance was held for the first time this year in the University Y.M.C.A. on the eve of the Miami-U. C. game. The dance was organized to fur- nish a place for University students to gather on this date, enjoy themselves, and show their school spirit. The idea met with whole-hearted approval from the students. Ulex Dance December 15, 1934 The Ulex Da nce was held this year in the University Y.M.C.A. As is the cus- tom at this dance the most prominent Freshman woman was to be chosen. Conjecture ran high as to who would receive the honor. Jerry Jacobs, an outstanding Freshman, well merited her new title. Also as a feature of the eve- ning Ulex pledged some of the more promising Sophomore men. Omicron Delta Kappa Prom April 13, 1935 The Omicron Delta Kappa Prom was formerly the Jun- ior Prom. It was the largest dance of the year and was held in the Netherland Plaza ' s Hall of Mirrors. The sororities were well repre- sented, each hoping their candidate for the coveted honor of Prom Queen would reach the throne. At mid- night the newly elected queen, Marjorie Brumleve of Theta Phi Alpha, was intro- duced by President Walters. Sophos Dance February 23, 1935 Sophos Dance was the name given to the Sophomore Prom of other years. According to the precedent set last year three girls, Helen Ruehlmann, Senior, Jean Prather, Junior, and Ruth DeCour- sey, Sophomore, were chosen as repre- sentatives. This year was the second year that this plan of choosing was used and It proved very successful. It will undoubtedly become a tradition of the Sophos Dance. In+ra-Fraternity Dance March I, 1935 The Intra-Fraternlty Dance made Its de- but this year In the Gibson Ballroom to the dusky tunes of the Cotton Club Or- chestra. This dance was Instigated by the President ' s Council and all fraternity men were Invited. It did a great deal toward promoting a stronger feeling of unity among the fraternities. % 1 The Committee Russ Towers, Chairman John FIndlay Janet Koolage Marjorie Cowell Haps Kemper Sid Isaacs Towers The Varsity Boatride — May 17, 1935 The social season was topped off by the Varsity Boatride passing by in a blaze of glimmering lights and a smattering of ugly men. Kaufmann The University of Cincinnati Student Branch of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers was installed in the fall of 1926 for the purpose of promoting the social and professional acquaintance of students pursuing courses in Chemical Engineering with men engaged in industry. Every student registered in the Chemical Engi- neering Course is a member by virtue of his interest in the profession. Each year the organization sponsors a series of popular lectures, widely attended by Faculty, students, and public, which lectures are held every Friday noon in the auditorium of the Chemistry Building. The lectures offered cover a wide variety of subjects and are designed to appeal to the entire student body as well as the Faculty; thus they serve to broaden the interests of both Faculty and students. _...„,„, ,- L ' A+eller PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECTURAL SOCIETY Founded, 1928 University of Cincinnati Premiere Chapter Deacon. They ring in cities and on farms, in shops and offices, bringing business, carrying instructions, giving in- formation and assurance. The telephone is the fleet and sure messenger of a nation on the march. THE CINCINNATI AND SUBURBAN BELL TELEPHONE COMPANY Dear Mr. Holmes: Once upon a time, In the Maytime of 1934, a very honest and upright young man professed to have the knowledge and ability to edit an annual. So the story goes, he got the job. And now, one year later, he returns, like a dog with his tail between his legs, sadder but wiser. It has been a long, hard struggle this year learning how to edit a year-book, but at last I have received my diploma and am qualified to begin work. However, an unappreciative Student Council says, No, you have learned how to do it, so forget it . But all foolishness aside, the job is finished. As I look back the troubles which confronted me and which I thought at the time were unsurmountable appear just the same as the ones from years back. Braunie and Kirsanof didn ' t get any of the art work in until the very last minute, but it got in, and it ' s just as good as other years. Bob Clawson was called upon at a time when all was lost to do the water colors, and he did them, two and three in an evening, in great style. I had one shining light of hope in Lorbach who rescued me from the depths of despair by taking some mighty nice pictures. But he was a silly guy and an awful nuisance at times, always talking about buying new camera equipment. Can ' t you just see the Investigation Committee turning over in its grave! Sandy and Binnie tried to refute the old axiom that business and pleasure do not mix. but Frank and I were conscientious young men, saturated with a feeling of responsibility, so the book was published in spite of them. I ' m not so sure though, as I think it over, but what the law has been proven false. ■Well, the book is complete and the page is finished, so I might as well say: So long and better luck next year, Don T. Gilbert. i
