M.D. Dean of the College of Medicine T has been the earnest endeavor of the Faculty of the College of Medicine to fur- nish you with a sound knowledge of the fundamentals underlying the Science and Art of Medicine and to inculcate the high ideals of our profession. It is our hope that through experience, study and the further development of those individual characteristics that mark the professional man, you may all attain successful careers. Employ every effort to improve your natural faculties, keep your minds alert and receptive for the new truths that are constantly advancing the field of our knowledge. The same careful observations and judgments used in the laboratory are essential in the practice of clinical medicine but do not forget the patient and his viewpoint in the ardor of your interest in the existing pathology. Man is a social animal and every disease has a social aspect. Use your knowledge and insight socially as well as medically. Ph.D. Dean of the Graduate School OU, Mr. Editor, have urged me to give your classmates a parting word which may live with them in future years. The best I can do is remind them that they have had. during four years., the privilege-of learning the great legacies from the past in both letters and sciences. Recollect this experience as frequently as possible in order to enjoy the happiness of a full life and. from the knowledge of the success or failure of other times. to perfect a sound judgment in meeting the problems of the future. While most of you will not enter the Graduate School. yet it has unobtrusively been responsible for the scholarship which you have enjoyed. It is told of Saint Anthony, of Padua. that he became a great leader of thought and conduct by first retiring into the desert: men. observing his disregard of ordinary aifairs, out of curiosity followed him to his retreat in great numbers that they might learn of his power of self-control: so scholarship, as a true guide to life. should be sought for and ought not seek men that they may discover its rewards. 7-v Nw hx 22 S if M 1 n 2 12 fi - 5. i 1 or gi if' 2- 2 . if A i f Q U' 13 f 5 F ,N r N, as i ,,... 5 ferent 11

.... .. . . M5 .M .. .. ' , ,, . . MERTON L. FERSON, A.M.. LLOB. Dean of the College of Law YOUNG man was asked recently by a member of the board of bar examiners why he desired to enter the law. His naive reply was It looks like easy jack to me. A man who approaches the bar in that frame of mind is not only a menace to society. but he will likely fall a prey to his own unworthy ambition. Large rewards, in terms of money. prestige, and power. have come to some members of the legal pro- fession. Dismal failure has come to others. There is probably no other occupation where success attends in such direct proportion to character. ability. and industry. A semi-scientific study has been made of the biographies of fifty presidents of the American Bar Association with a view of ascertaining what qualities led to their success. The study resulted in a rough finding' that character, industry, technical legal knowl- edge. and personal charm, in the descending order named. were the qualities most conducive to these specimens of American success. Let him who seeks easy jack Q? avoid the legal profession.
