So. for ten years. the revenue derived from that part Of the estate lying in Cincinnati and its vicinity was applied to the improvement of the college. In 1870. the General Assembly of Ohio. in order to unite the various educational projects which had sprung up in Cincinnati. passed an act to aid and promote education, and through this act. almost a year later. the University of Cincinnati was founded. CHARLES MCMICKEN. at the time of his death in 1853 bequeathed The first site for a university building was that which had been the 01d McMieken homestead, on Clifton Avenue. the same building which Tater became the Medical College. and which was last year used to house the soldiers which the University undertook to educate in technical lines for the government war service. In 1895 the College had grown too big,y for this building, and McMicken H2111 was erected in an attractive position in Burnet VVDods. com- manding: a superb view of the city. McMickcn Hall was the nucleus of a still increasing aggregate of beautiful buildings in Burnet Woods. The expansion of the University has been rapid, assisted as it was by the generous gifts of public-spirited men and women. Hanna Hall. the gift Of Henry Hanna, was added in 1890 and four years later Briggs Cunningham made possible the erection of its twin building. Cunning- ham Hall. Van Wormer Library was the last building to be erected for ten years. Then. in 1911, the Engineering Building was completed. closely fol- lowed by the gymnasium and the power plant A municipal bond issue made possible the erection of a stadium on the athletic Eeldt which was called Carson Field, in honor of the untiring work and devotion of Dr. Arch I. Carson. The Chemistry Building. located near the Engineeringr Building. and the new Medical College. convenient to the City Hospital. have but very recently been occupied. The latest permanent building to be occupied is the VVomarfs Building. splendidly equipped with a gymnasium. swimmingr p001. study rooms, reception rooms. oHiees. and moms for various school activities. The House- hold Arts Department is also established in this building. The Baldwin bequest in 1917, valued between six and seven hundred thousands of dollars. gives :mmther opportunity for extension. Mrs. Wilson. :1 Cincinnati woman. who realized the need of the University for an auditorium. very recently presented the University with a substantial gift which makes possible the erection and equipment of a much-nceded convocation hall. to be known as the Obed J. and Amanda Landrum Wilson Memorial Hallt With the ever-inereasing attendance of out-of-town students. the necessity for dormitories arise and the necessity will no doubt be realized by public contributions.
