In spite of lack of funds, the smallness; of the fac- 11Ity, and their failure to adopt the more liberal Upon Coxts resignation in elective course system adopted by the leading colleges of the country, the University, in answer to a real need in the eonnnunity, continued to grow steadily. 111 1897 the Ohio Medical College became the Medical Department of the Univer- sity, and on July 1. 1897. the 01d Law School of the Cincinnati College became the UniversityLaw Department. As the University increased its scope, as its faculty became larger, and the number of its stu- dents greater. the demand for a strong executive became more and more felt. In June. 1899, the Board. after much painstaking investigation elected Dr. Howard Ayres. of Missouri, President of the University. The Academic year of 1900 brought the new President and the great upheaval of January 12. As to the future of the University-welh I draw the veii. It is the duty of the historian to relate the pastenot to predict the future.
