ROFESSOR W'AYLAND RICHARDSON BENEDICT who occupier; the chair of Philosophy, was born at Rochester. N. Y. In 1865 he received the degrees of A. B. and A. M. from the University of Rochester. N. Y. In the same year he became Assistant Principal of Rochester Free Academ-xa and held that position for two years. From 1867 to 1869 he had charge of Springfield Institute, at Pittsfield. Mass. He again became a student at Rochester. and was graduated from the Rochester Theological Seminary in 1871. In 1873 he was called to the pastorate 0f the Mt. Auburn Baptist Church, Mt. Auburn, Cincinnati. where he continued until W. R. Bem-zmu'r. - elected to the position he now occupies. hy the Board of Directors. Professor Benedict was Dean of the Faculty during the Academic year 1391-92, and was re-elected to that office to serve for the year 1394-95: but. after assuming the duties, ill health caused him to resign. He had, in connection with his studies, also occupied the position of In- structor in Civil Engineering. This he continued to till until 1873, when he hecame Professor of D-Iatlleiilatics in Chester Military Academy. at Cheeten Pa. In 1875 he accepted the offer of the Assistant Professorship of Mathematics in the University of Cincinnati. and in 1878 was advanced to the position he now fills. Professor Hyde was Dean of the Faculty duringr the year 1392-03. and was Chairman of the Facultytor the latter half nf the year 1394-95.
