1 come from a monumental desire to achieve. In this spirit of progress and its related quest for quality, the administration formed a com- mittee to institute increased admissions standards. As a result of this action, the high ACT scores of the incoming freshmen were a source of pride to the university. The desire for quality in education at UCA is a movement that is advancing from the inside out-- faculty, students, and administra- tion are combined in a search for meaningful education and intellec- tual stimulation. It is hoped that the outside community will take notice of the positive action that was forged from the internal core of the UCA campus. Another reflection of the ongoing drive for knowledge at UCA is re- nowned speakers su'ch as controversial Colorado governor Richard Lamm, population studies authority Dr. Paul R. Erlich, presi- dential economic advisor Julian L. Simon, and former Mississippi gov- ernor William F. Winter all who arrived at UCA for a week of lec- tures and seminars from Monday, October 20, to Friday, October 24. This year's theme, chosen to coin- cide with the celebration of Arkan- ' 4 2 l sas' sesquicentennial, was Land of Opportunity? l986 saw a dramatic change in the future of the university: Dr. Jefferson D. Farris, UCA president, resigned his position here in order to assume a post as chief executive officer of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Dr. Farris was at the helm of an out- standing university administration. As a former UCA student who rose to the top to become a champion administrator, he is a paradigm of the successful administrator who continued All Alone. Sam Hasty. a sophomore music major, plays a trumpet solo at the UCA- sponsored high school marching band contest. Books, Books, Books. Torreyson Library. which is to be remodeled soon, houses a large number of books that students may use to enhance their knowledge. l l Opening 5
