1 come from a monumental desire to achieve. In this spirit of progress and its related quest for quality, the administration formed a com- mittee to institute increased admissions standards. As a result of this action, the high ACT scores of the incoming freshmen were a source of pride to the university. The desire for quality in education at UCA is a movement that is advancing from the inside out-- faculty, students, and administra- tion are combined in a search for meaningful education and intellec- tual stimulation. It is hoped that the outside community will take notice of the positive action that was forged from the internal core of the UCA campus. Another reflection of the ongoing drive for knowledge at UCA is re- nowned speakers su'ch as controversial Colorado governor Richard Lamm, population studies authority Dr. Paul R. EI ' 1u lllillfl l m possesses the knowledge and skill to pursue excellence from the inside of the academic world out. Last spring, construction was started on a new annex to the Lew- is Science Center. This addition ad- vanced the already outstanding science department by creation of an ecology laboratory, an animal care laboratory, a genetics laboratory, and new computer science facilities. There will be in- creased classroom space and a new greenhouse, as well as a plant mu- seum. A new series of study labora- tories will ensure a quiet space for research away from the noise of the main classrooms. From the inside of the science department, a plan was devised to expand the possibilities of furthering the study and development of science. Now, the campus has been presented with an outside testimony of UCA's dedication to promoting education. Social activity and awareness on campus reflect human warmth and goodwill which spread from the in- side of this university outward. In addition to being supportive of advances in its facilities and educa- tional programs, UCA provides outlets for many types of inter- campus activities, representing a wide cross-section of student inter- ests. All manner of groups are re- presented here--political, Greek, honorary, religious, and others--and all are a continuing source of pride for the university. Many on-campus groups are ex- isting proof of efforts that began as the idea of one or two students and blossomed into functioning organiz- ations. It is a credit to UCA that . From the internal, individual voices of students to an extemal network of people and organiza- tions representing scholastic and so- cial excellence, the University of Central Arkansas is an institution which is rapidly evolving into a su- perior standard of collegiate quality in the overall university experience. This comes as no surprise to those who know the secret: Excellence is a process which is the result of starting with a dream and tuming it into a significant reality.
