Edward Smoot, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for Arkansas, delivers the main address at ROTC activation Military ROTC brigade swears in 600 cadets State College ROTC cadet brigade was officially activated in a ceremony October 25 at Estes Field. Guests included Edward Smoot of Fort Smith, secretary of the Army's civilian aide for Arkansas, and representatives of the Fourth Army Head- quarters at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dr. Silas D. Snow, president of the college, spoke to the brigade. Other highlights included presentation of the colors to Brigade Cadet Colonel Steve Creek, a junior from Springdale, and a brigade inspection by Mr. Smoot, Dr. Snow and LCT George E. Pickett IV, commander of the ROTC detachment. Major Joseph M. Ditommaso, detachment ad- jutant, read the orders activating the brigade which is open to students at Hendrix and Central Baptist Colleges as well as from SCA. The program, one of the first set up by the Army in 14 years, is ad- ministered by Fourth Army Headquarters. Upon successful completion of the four-year program, ROTC cadets will be commissioned as Army second lieutenants. Laying the groundwork for ROTC brigade were LTC George Pickett tseatedj, CPT Charles Pflugrath, Sergeant Major Thomas Bryant, and Sergeant Robert Champagne. ,,ems!,,
