7L s the University of Wyoming puts the first 100 years behind it, a new century breaks through with many changes, many gaps to be filled. University President Donald L. Veal resigned from his post on June 30, 1987, and a search was on to fill the position. After narrowing down 131 applicants, a series of interviews began and a decision was made. Terry P. Roark, a former provost and vice president for academic and student affairs from Kent State University, took over the reins as UW ' s 21st president. Along with the job of running a university, President Roark had to come up with a plan to cut costs while maintaining the quality of education and activities. An economic slump hit Wyoming in mid-1987 and continued through 1988. Oil prices fell and the effort to pull in industry failed. 2 Opening
