james Hook Education james Hook is a Professor of Education. He is in his tenth year at UW. I believe in testing or evaluation. I think evaluation is a much better word than testing. I give students options as to whether they want an essay or a multiple choice examination. There are students who do not do well on either of these two types of tests, and I would allow a student to take an oral examination if he wanted to. The major consideration is that the student learns the knowledge to become proficient in what he wants to do. HI have a lot more confidence in the students than some people do .... I don,t think we have tapped the real potential that students have to make decisions about their own behavior and their own lives. This is one area we need to give a good deal more attention to.

Anton Munari Civil Engineering Anton Munari teaches in the Civil Engin- eering Department. About teaching he said, 'CI love teaching very much, and Iyve always been teaching Freshmen. Because we have a lecture-lab type thing We get to know stu- dents very Well. I suppose if I werenit able to get to them that closely I wouldnit enjoy teaching as much as I do. UI would say that my biggest complaint about the University of Wyoming is that our salaries as far as people without PhD's is not sufficient. I only have a masters degree and have had one since 1958 and been on the faculty for seventeen years. Right now many of our starting people with B.S. degrees within six months or a year make the same salary I do after seventeen yearsf' 24

The Drama and The whole problem of the Student Senate rests with the individuals. I'm sorry to say that the people who have been elected I think probably traditionally have been popular and that,s just about the extentf, ,That's the way Steve Miller, Executive Assistant for Student Academic Affairs, put it. We agree. Steve continued, One of the biggest arguments used in the Senate is my constituency is in favor of this which means that they probably talked to about a half dozen of the kids in their house or dorm before they came to the meetingf, When asked what was the most important piece of legislation to go through the Senate this year one Senate member re- plied, Turn it off Cour tape recorderl, I've got to think of one . . . Cpausel . . . I can't think of anything. Cbviously, the Senate doesn't affect the average student very much. They spend too much of their time laboring over legislation which has no chance of passing the Faculty Senate and the Board of Trustees. A special meeting was called to determine the official ASUW position on the four-year college at Casper. For the Senate to believe that its lobbying group had any real influence with the state legislature was only their first mistake. The Senate did, however, make an attempt to reform itself by making a smaller, more efficient, body by way of a constitutional amendment. The amendment was defeated in an election drawing on all of 410 students. The Senate is caught up in a viscious circle. The Senate doesnit do anything really meaningful so the students have no confidence or interest in the Senate, with no student support or interest the Senate is handicapped in doing anything meaningful.
