They are a diverse group, but all share an enjoyment for teach- ing. Some are even tenured. Isn't it nice to know that sometimes even tenured teachers still work hard. jerry Britschgi is a graduate teaching assistant in statistics. After he retired from the Air Force he decided to come to UW and do his graduate work in statistics because he felt there are more opportunities in this field than in abstract mathematics. Stat 301 D is a required course for many majors. Two reasons why so many people do so poorly in this class are: S' Lack of familiararity with mathematics, and because they never come to classf, When asked what he thought made him a good teacher Mr. Britschgi replied, HI put myself in the studentfs position more than most of the instructors dof' Cn., 'ii

Keith Hull English Keith Hull, Assistant Professor of English, received one of the highest overall ratings in the 1971-72 Student Evaluations. When asked Why he thought he had done so well he replied, HYou,ve got to respect the students. I donyt mean necessarily like them or love them, but at least have respect for them and what they are trying to do or what they try to tell vou. You also have to have a love for what it is youlre teaching, and I do enjoy what I'm teachingf, HI very much appreciate the sort of Cacademicl freedom that I have. I can request the sort of courses that I want to teach, and live been fortunate in getting them. I can teach them as I want to with the texts I want to use with no interference or scrutnizing at all.
