By 1891 there was a military corps on campus. Today, R.O.T.C. remains but only in the past decade did it cease to be mandatory. Athletics began around 1893. The teams usually played town teams or surrounding high schools. Around 1893 the name S'CowboysH was given to the teams. Today our athletic budget is comparable to the national defense budget, both in size and in secrecy. student affairs outside the classroom today is a controversial matter. In many ways the University is giving up its paternal attitude toward students. just three years ago all dormitories had strict hours and kissing in the lobbies was a punishable offence. Now many of the dorms are co-ed and some are without hours. In other ways the University still polices student behavior. Drinking is still forbidden anywhere on campus. The right to search dorm rooms for stolen articles, liquor, or dope is reserved and often used. A student Rights and Responsibilities Code ambiguously delimits student misbehavior which may result in suspension or explusion. Women's Gymnastics 1909

Early social activities were provided by a Camera Club, two literary societies, debating clubs, an English club, a cadet band, a young men,s glee club, and a University choral society. Today clubs and activities have proliferated, leaving behind however a few of the older groups. By 1900 the University had graduated 67 students. In 1902, with the urging of two companies of girl,s drill teams the legislature appropriated funds for a gymnasium building. Basketball came with the new gymnasium although it was played mainly by girls. The sport was not popular with boys yet.
