The University opened September 1887 with 5 professors, 2 tutors, and 42 students. The students ranged in age from 12 to 23. Most were enrolled in the Preparatory School. Today, semester fees for resident students are S195 and for non-residents 3678. Total estimated expences per year for residents are 81500. Our enrollment is stabalizing at slightly more than 8000. The Preparatory School QUniversity Prepl is in its very last year. As early as 1887 the University took an active interest in student affairs. The board asked for abstinence from use of tobacco and liquor and asked students to stay away from places where liquor was sold or gambling took place. University interest in

auditorium, a gymnasium, a library, classes, laboratories, offices, and even a rifle range. Since that time Old Main has been completely remodeled. Only administrative offices remain. The gymnasium has been replaced by Registration and Records, the auditorium by the Admissions department. Old Mainis impressive tower has long since been removed. The entrances no longer lead directly to the second floor. The Universityis first president was john W. Hoyt. He received a first year salary of 82000. The range of faculty salaries went from S900 to 81800. Today our football coach makes over 820,000 a year. The University opened offering a Preparatory School and six departments, Liberal Arts, Philosophy, Letters, General Science, Fine Arts, and Practical Arts. student affairs outside the classroom today is a controversial matter. In many ways the University is giving up its paternal attitude toward students. just three years ago all dormitories had strict hours and kissing in the lobbies was a punishable offence. Now many of the dorms are co-ed and some are without hours. In other ways the University still polices student behavior. Drinking is still forbidden anywhere on campus. The right to search dorm rooms for stolen articles, liquor, or dope is reserved and often used.
