versify of vryoming The old covered wagons rolled right along. And when they stopped, they brought settlers into the new terri- tory; settlers who established homes, started busin- esses, and enforced law and order. Then in 1890 they were rewarded when the territory was ad- mitted as a state . . . the state of Wyoming. The days of the old frontier — days of physical hardships and danger — are gone now, but there are many new challenges to be met in this changing world today. Wyoming has met these challenges and is contin- uing as a greater state for a greater people . 7 volume XXXVII

dedication New buildings, additions of colleges and departments, reorganization of the athletic department . . . these are but a few of the accomplishments of President George Duke Humphrey since he came here in 1945. Because Humphrey has done so much for the state of Wyoming and in particular for the University of Wyoming, this year ' s WYO is dedicated to him. One of the things for which we are most proud of Humphrey is his work with the athletic depart ' ment, since he modernized it and added more sports. Since he came, Wyoming U. has become a formidable power, having turned out champions in basketball, football, baseball, tennis, swim- ming, and wrestling. Also, he has added hockey, skiing, and rodeo to the sports offerings, and hopes to build teams of championship calibre in them. The College of Commerce and Industry and the College of Pharmacy are major expansions of the University. Also, the Division of Adult Education and Community Service, De- partment of Student Personnel and Guidance, Division of Alumni Relations and Grad- uate Personnel, and departments of Speech, Journalism, and Range Management and Forestry have been formed through the efforts of Humphrey. The University is one of the very few in the country that has worked out a set of by-laws and regulations for the faculty and Board of Trustees; which is a major accomplishment to the Prexy ' s credit. He helped organize the graduate school, developed the Natural Resources Institute, broadened and enlarged the of- ferings in music and art, and enlarged the budget for research work on the campus. Humphrey graduated from Tippah County Agricultural High School in Mississippi in 1915. From there he went to Blue Mountain, Miss., where he received his B. A. He went to the University of Chicago for his M. A. and Ohio State University for his Ph. D. With an eye toward the future Humphrey plans to strengthen the faculty and improve working conditions, put more and more money into research, and have another building pro- gram to include a new library, infirmary, and small class- room building. The present building program included a new Agriculture building. Education building, men ' s dormitory, Bookstore and Arts building, additions to Knight Hall and the Power Plant, and remodeling of Old Mam. Our Prexy came from Mississippi, and with him he brought some of that Southern hospital- ity , which mixed right well with the West- ern friendship and humor. To him we doff our hats in thanks and say, Best wishes for the future.
