The student who enters the Union today finds the life of the campus reflected in all of its varied facets. In the lobby a show case advertises books, and posters announce a multitude of com- ing events - lectures and dances, conferences and parties. From the Snack Bar and the Com- mons the hum of voices announces good food and conversation. Students cluster at the Union desk with inquiries about the where and the when of things, or whisk up and down the stair- ways - to the game room or the book store, to a meeting or a television program. The Union has come into its own as a campus center. The first lighting of the fireplace . . .

This year Minneisko salutes the sparkling new Student Union-the building we have all been waiting for. Colorful and inviting, it has become in a single year the heart of the campus. When the Union opened its doors in Septem- ber, it seemed to many of us to be little more than a cafeteria with an unaccountable number of lobbies and anterooms. Freshmen were re- quired to eat in the Commons during the first semester, to be sure, and these and other stu- dents began to patronize the game room in the basement or the Snack Bar on the first floor, but the Union's possibilities were hardly realized. By November, however, things had changed. Offices were occupied on the second floor, con- ference rooms were more frequently used, and an increasing number of students began to spend their spare time in the lounges and the music room. Art exhibits, lectures, game room tournaments, fireside sings, and dances soon followed.
