After a shaky tune-up, in which the Quakers absorbed three set-backs in their first games, a not-to-be-denied Whitewzlter ball club began to function smoothly to the extent twelve straight conference victories and the championship. The Purple traveled to Carroll for the opening game only to find the going too mu handleg and they were defeated, 83-72. lVIilton proved to be the next stumbling block, taking a thrilling 66-64 victory at expense of Whitewater. Now it was VVhitewater's turn to get into the win column, and Dekalb fans watch steadily-improving Quakers beat them, 63-60. The University of Wisconsin Jayvees interrupted the anticipated State League con as they took a 52-47 decision at Riadison. Now, with their mistakes ironed out via the practice sessions, the xVl1lfCXN'1lIC1'CZlgC1'S destined to play some sensational basketball. lVIilton met a new VVSC team in Hamilton C at least they thought so and departed for Miltoii at the deficient end of a 64.-49 score. lVIilWaukee was knocked off in the first conference game, which was the Quakers' game of 1951, by a 61-54 score. Dekalb salvaged a 62-59 win. but Ducky Noonan saved the IQ points that hc gan that night for seed. He went on to dump in the highest total of the year, 35, as he lcd Quakers to a lop-sided, 74-62 victory over Stout. The two top scorersof VVhitewater, Herbst and Noonan, went on individual scoring ipagcs, with 32 and 25 points respectively, to beat Stevens Point, 78-65. A sort of double victory was celebrated as VVhitewater took Milwvaukee into camp, 77-52. xring the process, Eau Claire beat La Crosse and the Quakers were perched atop the league themselves. Carroll was encountered again, but after a close call Whitewater won, 56-52. Now the stage was set. La Crosse came down with high hopes, but those hopes were blasted ore an overflow crowd in Hamilton Gym, 63 -57. Superior supplied plenty of perturbation, and the Purple was forced to stallin the last 4 iutes to gain a 59-57 victory. Bill Tomaszewski fired in the winning basket. Oshkosh appeared in the roll of Little David and wasn't headed until the third quarter. en the Quakers took charge and went on to win, 60-55. Stevens Point, always tough, marred the perfect record of their opponents with a 79-76 ory in the last regularly scheduled game. XVith the state college championship tucked under its belt, VVhitewater had to dispose farroll in a play-off game for the right to represent VVisconsin in the NAIB Tournament 'ansas City. A phenomenal 537 accuracy in shooting, and again the VVhitewater quintet ionstrated their right to be the true champions they were, and ran over Carroll, 77-60. llecked with all the glory they could accumulate in VVisconsin, the boys set out for Kansas y. and a new hitch - a possible national rating. lVhitworth, their first opponent, provided re height than the Purple could cope with, howeverg and they were beaten in the opener, bo. Noonan paced the Quakers and finished the season in third place in the individual with 216 points in league play. ' Loach VV:-:igandt and his team provided VVhitewater and the surrounding area with thrill- e basketball, and this great team will undoubtedly go down in the record books as the in VVhitewater State College history.
