S croobi ■ ' What ' s your name? was the most frequent question asked at the qet acquainted party given tor the Congregational students by Scrooby. Join- ing the ranks of the group this season were many freshmen and transfer students. At Starin Park, members of Scrooby gathered for their picnics and wiener roasts, completed by singing and gamas. During the year, they also gathered with Wesley for joint activities which included a hayride, candy-making parties, and group discussions. In May, the annual banquet was held in honor of the seniors. Much of the credit for the successful year can be attributed to the work of the officers of the group. They were President Phyllis Larson, Vice-Presi- dent Earl Weideman, Secretary Arlene Stowell, and Treasurer Ray Emier. Supervising the group were Miss Florence Goodhue, faculty advisor, and the Reverend Mr. Robert Bench. We.Lj Wesley ' s fall activities started with a party for all Methodist students. The big event following this was a banquet for Methodist faculty and students. About 70 took part in this fellowship and good food. On a cold rainy night, Scrooby and Wesley students held a hay ride. Two wagons were filled with singing students, but after a short time the weather forced them back to the Congregational Church for square dancing, hot chocolate, and rolls. On January 17, Wesley students met with other religious groups from the college in a joint service. After a short worship service, they were shown the movie CROSSROADS. During Lent, Wesley sponsored a worship service and fellowship breakfast on Wednesday mornings. The year ' s activities were brought to a close with a picnic in May in the City Park. Pauley while the group prepared plays for classroom or general production. In January, Thornton Wilder ' s Our Town , distinguished by its use of the bare stage, led the year ' s parade of plays. Its unusu- ally large cast of 38 provided opportunity for many new Thespians to display their talents. Angel Street by Patrick Hamilton, produced in April, was the second three-act of the year and scored another marked success. In addition to these major productions, over thirty one-act plays were directed and produced by the members of the group, and several dramatic recitals sparked the below-stairs meetings. Two of these productions were the presentation of Don Piper ' s Pyramis and Thisbe to the Emerson Club, Bob Sager and Doug Poulten ' s Moonshine at the Lion ' s Club and Community Theater. During the second semester members wrote and directed their own plays. Others in the group participated in the Little Theater in Whitewater. The Thespians did not, however, restrict their activity to the boards. They supported the WSTC Radio Program from the outset, and presented their interpretations of plays over the radio. Leaders of the year ' s group were President Tom Tulloch, Vice- President Phillip MontMarquette, Secretary Darlyne Adolman, and Treasurer Don HInz. The faculty sponsor was Dr. John F. Pauley. r i appa Ujetta Wisconsin Epsilon of Pi Kapoa Delta was organized in 1943. The fraternity, in addition to recruiting student participants for debates and oratory and awarding that participation with membership in Pi Kappa Delta, sponsored an invitational debate tournament in December. This was the first tourney held in Whitewater since their discontinuance during the war. For the first time sine tournament, which was held in Stillwater, Oklahoma, during the Easter vacation. 1947, Whitewater was represented at the national PKD Increasing attention to speech work in the public schools means that college graduates who have achieved PKD membership, because of their debate and oratory achievements, increase their bargaining power for teaching positions. Striving for better and faster coverage of news, Mr. Crawford Beecher Thayer kept a needle in the staff to keep them hep to the news. The social event of the year was the annual Royal Purple Banquet held April 24 at the Congregational Church, when announcement was made of the coming year ' s staff. The entire band added pep to the football season with their ex- hibitions between halves and before the games. Not content to be the booster at the home games, they accompanied the team to Stevens Point, where both were a credit to the college. The football season reached a climax at Homecoming. The night of the pep rally, the band furnished music between skits and at the bonfire. On the Big Day, they led the parade and played at the gams, emphasizing th? them? of Homecoming Memories. The girls had much fun, for they carried on song tests, card parties, and private dances in their rumpus room. At Christmas they had a trad- itional dinner with all the trimmings — a very green tree and a very red Santa. For activities, the girls put up a 30-foot house decoration for Home- coming, with the title, We ' ll Devour Eau Claire. They also participated In intramural sports with basket- and volley-ball teams. The council, composed of the officers and representatives of each department, is elected by the girls at large. It draws up all the rules and regulations regarding housing, hours, and matters pertinent to living conditions for the women, in addition to promoting unity and deeper interest among them. Doreen Robison, chairman of this year ' s Big Sister Movement , helped organize freshmen girls ' activities, the first being a Little Sister Picnic the first Tuesday of the semester. With the old idea of rise and shine , the girls held a January breakfast at the College House, and in February held fheir fourth annual women ' s dinner at the Methodist church. In March, a convocation entitled YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD was presented especially for the freshmen. This year marked the beginning of a series of ABC coffee hours on Thursday after- noons during February and March for both stu- dents and faculty and staff members. The State WSGA Convention was held at Milwaukee to discuss the theme, Improving Human Relations on the Campus, in February. Twelve senior5 were chosen for the 1950-51 season by a committee composed of Dr. Cord O. Wells, Mr, Arnold J. Lien, Dr. Wynett Barnett, Dr. Adolph I. Wlnther, Mr Paul A. Carlson, and Mr. Oromel H, Bigelow, with the cooperation of the entire faculty. Who ' s Who first appeared in 1934-35 and has been published annually since that time. Ap- proximately 600 schools are represented. Only four-year colleges and universities are premitted to enter nominees for the recognition, with the quota of nominees based on the enrollment of the college. Qualifications are based on scholarship, lead- ership, participation in extra-curricular activities, general service, and potential usefulness to bus- iness and society. All information contained in the book is obtained from the students them- selves. Those selected this year were Ed Ritter Patricia Sommers Potter, William Raton, Doris Deffke Leslie, Fred Bertolaet, Nancy Schweiger, JoAnne Grube, Lois Giles, Glenn Davis, Nancy Miller, DuWayne Sheldon, and Harold Sliker. Vice-President Wesley Herbst, !nt Art Hill, Secretary Joyce The survivors of the sophomore year were back, ready and eager to learn, when school began on September 9, 1950. The year was a hectic one, with methods courses piling up, draft notices and engage- ment rings blossoming, the final choice of minors looming, the mad registration scurry, the athletic juniors out on the basketball court and gridiron, the supposed dark clouds of practice teaching descending upon them, the scholarly classmates swelling the ranks of the honor so- citles, and the final exams lurking darkly ever They struggled along, happy in the thought that their efforts were not in vain and knowing that every course and exam brought them closer and closer to that magic classification— SENIOR. The big event of the year for all juniors was the annual Prom held this year on May 5 in the Hamilton Gymnasium. Art Hill and the other class officers, aided by Mr. Charles Morphew, did a commendable job in producing this event without a hitch In the plans. .It Iv ««— UPPER i-fFr, Second Row, left to right: Vincent Pollock, Daniel Philll Rogan, David Richmond. Stunt Night saw Doug Poulter directing a take-off on television wrestling, which was well received by the audience, hacked their way through the intramural season during the year, and Lorin Stelzer directed the interfraternity squad thrc season. The bowling squad tried hard and cinched second place — from the bottom. The big event of the year, the Spring Formal, was held April 14 at Beulah Beach Resort, and was blessed with the attendance of 39 couples. Several alumni attended this event to renew old acquaintances and meet the new actives. Patricia Jens was chosen as the Phi Sigma Epsilon Pearl for this event. The year was closed with the annual Senior Party, thrown by the underclassmen, at Willard Reese ' s cottage at Whitewater Lake, in May. The annual Senior Award, a cup awarded to the most outstanding senior, was received by William Paton. Officers during the year were President William Paton, Vice-President Walter Caldwell, Recording Secretary Floyd Brenhoit, Corresponding Secretary C. P. Hammarlund, and Treasurer Harold Kaedlng. For Homecoming, the trat worked hard on a float and house decorations, but didn ' t snag any of the honors. However, they made up for their loss on Stunt Night by copping first place for Humorous. In sports, members of the frat helped win the bowling trophy, and participated actively in inter-fraternity bowling and basketball. With a championship football team providing the major thrill on the campus. the Phi Chi ' s were proud of their share — 14 representatives on the team and managerial staff. After the Homecoming game, the chapter held a banquet at Sterlingworth Hotel. The fall Pledge Formal came in the month of March with nearly full attendance, at the Colonial Club at Da.ien. At the beginning of the second semester, Anita Gajewski put on the uniform and Chuck took his off to try an all blue one when he left for the navy. Of these members, Betty, Bonnie, and Jack completed their second year, and received emblems for their participation. Both teams went through an unbeaten season, playing six games each. Whitewater ' s best offense at times was its strong defense. The defense allowed a total of 26 points to be scored against it, with the last three games shutouts. The season opened against a team that was supposed to be one of v he top aggregation— Platteville. The visiting Pioneers scored first on a pass play to lead 7-0. Whitewater came back with two scores via the passing route, Dick Bailey to Earl Bye, and the Quakers had their first game 13-7. Stevens Point was next and the feeling was that Whitewater had been p laying over their heads in the first game and were likely to fall off. Lawrence ■■Red Entress kicked two field goals and two extra points to add to touchdowns by Dick Vanden Avond, Bye, and Dick Kivi as Whitewater showed that the first win had been no fluke by winning 26-13. Whitewater got a scare in the Milwaukee game as the Green Gulls, taking the klckoff, drove deep into V hitewater territory. Here the defense stiffened and WSTC took over. On the third play from scrimmage, Bailey romped 84 yards for a score. This touchdown showed the way as the Quakers went on to win 33-6, as Dick Noonan, Vanden Avond, and Bye all ran to pay dirt and Entress kicked two field goals and two extra points. The Milwaukee game marked the last scoring done against the men defending the Whitewater goal. The defensive outfit had done a great job through the Milwaukee game and they did a tremendous job from then on. Red Entress. In addition to kicking extra points and field goals, was one of the stalwarts beind the line. Ray Dyer and Gene Molinaro were the defensive ends, and Art Hill, Noonan, John Bohlman. Bill Tomaszewskl and all of the otTier defensive men did their part throughout the football season. Following the Milwaukee game, WSTC made one of Its longest trips In recent years as they moved Into Superior. Here they began the string of three games without being scored upon as they whitewashed Superior 28-0. Vanden Avond scored two TD s and Bailey and Noonan scored one apiece. Noonan ' s score came on a ?0-yard punt return. Entress converted successfully after each touchdown. 135) Eau Claire was our homecoming competition and our fellows kept their slate clean by defeating them 17-0. The win made the standing 20 wins and seven losses in Homecoming games since 1922. Vanden Avond and Bye scored touchdowns in this game, while Entress kicked a field goal and two extra points after TD ' s. Bye ' s touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Johnny Riesch. The Purple and White clad Quakers closed their most successful sea- son since 1942 by thumping Oshkosh 41-0. Dick Bailey crossed the goa l three times. Noonan, Vanden Avond, and Kivi scored one each, while Entress converted five times. This was the most decisive victory for Whitewater and a fitting way to pull the curtain on an undefeated, untied season. Dur- ing the first part of the season It began to look as though the public har been right in picking WSTC for cup honors in the basketball race. The college cagers won eight straight conference games and were In possession of nrst place. Then came the disastrous trip to northern Wisconsin, and the hopes of Whitewater fans for a basketball championship were gone. Whitewater moved Into Superior first, and there absorbed their first conference loss of the season. This was not too bad, and they still had a very good chance of at least tying for the championship, but the next game was played against River Falls the following Monday, and the second loss was chalked up against vhe cagers from WSTC. With this loss, almost ell hope of winning the title dis- appeared. Whitewater came back to win their last two games against Milwaukee and Stevens Point, but the best they could do was to tie for second place as the LaCrosse aggregation added the basketball title to their co- cha mpionship In football. Whitewater ' s record for the year was an excellent one of 15 wins against only five losses. Eight non-conference games are included in this record. While losing only two out of 1 2 in conference play, the college quintet lost three out of eight against non-conference foes. Carroll College of Wau- kesha was the only team to defeat Whitewater twice. They did it by scores of 73-68 and 67-62. DeKalb was the winner of the other game. In a later game, WSTC avenged the loss to DeKalb, however, in a 78-77 overtime thriller. Dick Noonan, Don Erlckson, Wesley Herbst, John Riesch and Bill Tomaszewski were the five men who carried the biggest part of the load for he year ' s quintet. Herbst and Noonan carried the brunt of the scoring through the season as they scored 431 and 368 points respectively. Erlckson was third on the team, scoring 174 points. Riesch and Tomaszewski did their share of scoring in most of the games, but the defensive side of the picture was the place where they were an essential part of the success of the season. Of course, one of the most Important parts of any ball team is the reserve strength. The Quakers were extremely fortunate In having such players as Gene Molinaro, Al Schlatter, Dick Bailey, Bob Polzin, Tom Bauer, and John Bohlman. All but Schlatter, a senior, will be back next year, barring the draft or some other unforseen circumstance.
