to dr. paul we tychsen, dedicate... It seems only fitting and proper. Since Nature is King in our theme. Of land and sky and water. Rocks and clouds and streams, That we dedicate our Gitche To a friend who has done his best. To teach us about the earth's riches With enthusiasm, interest and zest. A graduate of Carleton and then Nebraska U, He came to State but seven years back. To see what he could do. To guide us in our careers ahead. And to fill our knowledge thirst. Always willing to give his fullest To his students who always come first. Thus, as you turn these pages, And recall old memories. Enjoy the scenes of nature's gifts. Developed over centuries. As a leader, an educator or a friend Dr. Tychsen will always be. Foremost when you look back, At your days at SSC. 6

 On the shores of Gitche Gurnee . . . Longfellow, in his poem, Hiawatha, wrote about the beauty of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. We who live here sometimes fail to appreciate the serene beauty and majestic proportions of our northern wonderland. This year the 1959 Gitche Gurnee takes great pleasure in saluting our Lake Superior region. As you page through this book ond review the many hours you spent in classes, the cafeteria, at the gym ond stadium, and on the donee floor, remember and appreciate also the great panorama of nature that is everywhere around you ... the lakes, the beaches, the rocky shores, the lofty pines, the white birch, the bubbling streams . . . and as nature is always changing so too are we changing os we advance ever onward towards our separate gools. In later years you will oft times look back and remember the happy years you spent at Superior State College on the shores of Gitche Gurnee.
