On the shores of Gitche Gurnee . . . Longfellow, in his poem, Hiawatha, wrote about the beauty of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. We who live here sometimes fail to appreciate the serene beauty and majestic proportions of our northern wonderland. This year the 1959 Gitche Gurnee takes great pleasure in saluting our Lake Superior region. As you page through this book ond review the many hours you spent in classes, the cafeteria, at the gym ond stadium, and on the donee floor, remember and appreciate also the great panorama of nature that is everywhere around you ... the lakes, the beaches, the rocky shores, the lofty pines, the white birch, the bubbling streams . . . and as nature is always changing so too are we changing os we advance ever onward towards our separate gools. In later years you will oft times look back and remember the happy years you spent at Superior State College on the shores of Gitche Gurnee. to dr. paul we tychsen, dedicate... It seems only fitting and proper. Since Nature is King in our theme. Of land and sky and water. Rocks and clouds and streams, That we dedicate our Gitche To a friend who has done his best. To teach us about the earth's riches With enthusiasm, interest and zest. A graduate of Carleton and then Nebraska U, He came to State but seven years back. To see what he could do. To guide us in our careers ahead. And to fill our knowledge thirst. Always willing to give his fullest To his students who always come first. Thus, as you turn these pages, And recall old memories. Enjoy the scenes of nature's gifts. Developed over centuries. As a leader, an educator or a friend Dr. Tychsen will always be. Foremost when you look back, At your days at SSC. 6 i •. . The year 1959 saw the Fex Fraternity complete its 44th successful year os a campus fraternal organization. The school year began with our candidate for Homecoming King, Jack Chopper Evens, winning the coveted golden crown. The Fex entry in the Homecoming parade won second prize in the humorous division. Our Homecoming skit won much acclaim, including a letter from President Jim Dan Hill. At Thanksgiving time, Fex members arrived at the two Superior children's homes with plump Thanksgiving turkeys. The 44th annual Fex Christmas Formal under the cochairmanship of Al Guerrero and Bob Hack was held at the V.F.W. Hall on December 27. As in the past our dance proved to be one of the biggest of the year. 76 A New Year's Eve party was held for our members and friends at a local hall. All those who participated reported they hod a good time. Easter Monday found us honoring our alumni with the annual stag banquet. Alumni from all over the country: Minnesota, Michigan, Oklahoma, Colorado, California, Ohio . . . attended. The month of May was the occasion for the annual Fex Dinner Dance. We went all out in making this one the most successful ever held. During the evening the dates of the Fex members were presented with mementos of the dance. Co-ops are a different type of business because they are owned by their customers and operated for service. They pay a fixed, fair return on investment capital, but the bulk of the net savings are returned back to the customers, to each according to his or her annual purchases. Each co-op shareholder has one, equal vote in the affairs of the co-op. The members elect a Board of Directors to run the co-op for them, and the Board hires a manager. For this reason, your co-op is very sensitive to the wishes of the customers, who are its bosses. Everyone is welcome to join and shop at your friendly Co-op Supermarket, because co-ops are non-denominational and non-parti san. The membership cuts across racial, eco nomic, religious and national backgrounc lines. Co-ops are endorsed by churches o most denominations, by labor unions, farm organizations, professional associations, anc many other types of American democratic groupings of citizens. Buy co-op and join a co-op, because nc other, but NO other business in our area ever had so much to offer to the customer Investigate a Co-op career—it is service o democracy with a brilliant future for YOU!
