Jackets Tie for Second Place The 1952-53 Yellow Jacket basketball squad, coached by athletic director Leo DiMarco, had the most successful season of any team at SSC since the conference champions of 1940-41. With an over all season's record of 15 wins and six defeats, the Jackets won eight of these games in the Wisconsin State College Conference while losing only four, enabling them to tie with River Falls for second place behind Platteville, the conference champions. Only illness and the loss of two key players, Mike Hennessey who was lost before the start of the season because of a conference eligibility rule and Donald Polglase who injured his knee in mid-January, kept the team from achieving even further heights. Using a fast-breaking style of offense which they aptly combined with smooth working plays, the squad broke all former SSC scoring records by storing away 103 points in one game and parting the nets tor a season's total of 1,594 points. This gave them a record average of 75.9 points per game against the opposition's overall total of 1,431 points which gave them a 68.1 points per game average. Greatly attributing to the success of this year's team, which rolled away 12 straight victories on the homey confines of Gates Gymnasium, was the potent scoring threat found in each man on the team. Leading the way in this department was the elusive captain Derrick Walker, who was the second highest scorer in the Wisconsin State College Conference, and smooth working Jack Hulmer, sixth highest scorer in the conference. Closely following these two in the scoring were Len Bartolutti, Bob Herubin, and Donald Polglase. Of these, only Polglase and Walker are seniors. He never gave an A for effort, but those who have truly evidenced the interest in science and exerted the effort inherent in his exacting standards have often written A finals. By virtue of these characteristics, the man we honor has contributed more graduate students to advanced study in his field (biology) than any other on this campus. Many a prominent doctor and surgeon in this state and in this nation first learned about the lowly earthworm and the octokitties, to borrow one of his more elementary non-technical terms, from this great teacher.
