president’s message . . . With this issue, the 1962 Meletean marks a half century of continuous publication. Anniversaries are frequently the occasion for recalling the past and perhaps this should be no exception. The oldest of the State Colleges in Western Wisconsin, River Falls has had a long history of service to the state. Eighty-four years have passed since its first class of six students was graduated. In the intervening years, marked by steady growth in enrollment, faculty, curricula and physical facilities, the College has held to an ideal — a belief in the essential worth of the individual. Because of this. River Falls has consistently centered its program on the student and has had a tradition of a dedicated faculty striving to encourage individual achievement and excellence. In the words of the Catalog. The College views the student as the major reason for its existence. Its courses, programs and activities are designed for his benefit. However, anniversaries also provide a point from which to view the future. After a decade of unprecedented expansion, the College may look forward to an enrollment of more than 3,500 students by 1970. It may anticipate more buildings, a larger faculty and the chance to offer even greater opportunity to young people. But we may also expect that the College will be loyal to the ideal it has served in the past and will remain a student-centered institution. E. H. Kleinpell President
