River Foil -a again represented on the gridiron in 1944. The footbel squad consisted mainly of freshmen, several of whom lacked even high school footbel experience. Only three lettor-mon returned from lest year's squad. With this materiel the Manion-man opened tho season at Remor Field against a Nevy-bolstorod St. Olaf team composed largely of former college stars. Tho Olos used their weight and experience advantage to win by a 20-0 count. Tho Falcons got into the win column against tho Rod Wing Training School eleven in the second homo game of the season. 33-12. Hitt scored for the Falcons on a neatly executed quarterback play. Tho final game of tho season was played at Northneld against a powerful St. Olaf dub that had bean running rough-shod over other Navy-strengthened teams in the latter part of the season. The Oles tricky reverses and effective down-field blocking gave them several long scoring dashes and an easy 66-6 victory. The Falcons got thoir only score in the second quarter after a sustained drive from deep in their T na kvtbaU The 1944-1945 Falcon basketball team began the season as an unknown quantity, as only one veteran of last year's team returned, but the newcomers proved they had something as they swept to five straight victories in tho opening games. Those victories included homo-and-homo wins ovor Augsburg and Macalester and a victory over Concordia on tho Rivor Fall floor. Tho first defeat of the season was suffered at tho Hamline field house at the hands of the powerful Hemline Pipers by a 66-29 score. The Falcons returned homo to beet St. Olaf in the most thrilling gome of the season. 35-34. After scoring five points in the final minute to tie the game, the Falcons got the decision in an overtime on Dimick's long shot, which was in the air as the final gun sounded. The next throe gomes wore played on tho road, the Falcons oasily defeating Superior Teachers before dropping a fast game to St. Thomas. 69-50. The Menion-men then rolled up their highest score of tho season in drubbing Concordia, 75-44. The Falcons rolled to two more victories at home over the Prescott Flyers and Bethel Junior College before drop- Sa thriller to St. Thomas, 46-45, for tho first defeat on the homo in two seasons. River Falls then travelled to La Crosse and couldn't get rolling as they were upset by the Indians in a rugged game, 30-29. St. Mary's handed the Falcons another dofeat at Winona the following niant, 48-32. Manion's men returned home to avenao the La Crosse defeat with a 58-35 victory, and then whippod Superior, 48-35, in tho feature of the 1945 combined Homecoming and Winter Carnival. Rivor Falls ended this home stand against St. Mary's and came within six points of tying the score in a late rally after being behind by fifteen points at the half, but St. Mary's managed to stall and the final minutes of the game found them victors. In the last road game, St. Olaf avenged her earlier defeat on the Falls floor, as tho Olos got hot in the second half and pulled away. 64-44. Tho final game was ployed before the largest home crowd of the season against Hamline Univorsity. The Pipers, who had piled up a good record against tho top teams in tho nation, were hard pressod to win and gained a safe load only in the final minutes, when their stalling game broke up the Falcons' defense. Dimick did a remarkable job in holding the giant Howie Schultz to twelve points, oho of the lowest totals for him in the season. Sam Young led River Falls in scoring with 290 points in tho twenty gamos, followed by Hitt and Dimick who had 192 and 182 points, respectively- IhiMvbtill The spring athletic program featured tho revival of baseball at River Falls after the sport had been allowod to lapse for a period of one year due to the low enrollment of men in the spring term of 1944. The 1945 squad was rather limited as to number and previous experience, although several candidates had had considerable high school experience. The only returning letterman was Joe Ott, who worked on the pitcher's mound and in the outfield for the Falcons in 1943. Squad mombors wore: Joe Ott, Sam Young, Don Miles, Wolly Hitt. LADIES IN RETIREMENT, under the direction of Mr. Carfeton Ames. Special acting honors went to Joyce Kennedy for her portrayal of Ellen Creed and to MiBicent Stone and Maxine Huppert. The event gives the audience a chance to become acquainted with the cast. The idea was initiated last year after CRY HAVOC was presented, and the Masquers hope to make it a tradition. On April II the Masquers presented “The Sugerfoot Minstrels'' in the oolege auditorium. The performance was also given at the Hudson High School in the afternoon. Eagan:' Mrs. Gilbert this year showed her true ability as a coach when she molded a group of girls into one of the best volleyball teams the physical education department has had in years. Viola Halvorson, captain of team A, and Arlyn Bredahl, captain of toam B. wero the foundation for this volleyball season. The first game was held November I. and was a game of fast scoring, with neither side holding a comfortable margin until the final minutes of the game, when team B outplayed to win by a score of 21-14. Toam A staged a rally in the second game, which was hold November 6. The final whistle found toam A ahoad four points, with the final score 21-17. Novomber 8 found team A still in its scoring mood. At this game, they defeated team B by a score of 21-19. Tho majority of the losing team's points wore won in the closing seconds of the game, but their splurge came too late in the game to enable them to win. Team A, with championship honor aspirations, started the next two games with determination to win. This they fell short of by three points in the final two games, the B team emerging victorious in the Novombor 13 and November 15 games in an identical scoro of 21-18. Mrs. Gilbert picked the twelve members who did outstanding teamwork in the conferonco games, and the W.A.A. gave each honor member of the team fifty points to be used toward tho red R . The girls wero well trained in the technique of basketbal, and were highly maneuverable on the floor during the various games. Three games were played with the River Falls G.A.A. team. In the first game which was played by team A of both organizations, the college team outplayed the G.A.A. to win by the score, 24-21. The next game was played by team B of both organizations. The college team, although evenly matched by the G.A.A.. gained a margin in free throws, finally winning the game by the score, 24-20. The final game was played by the college team A and team B and the G.A.A, team A. During this contest the G.A.A. won the game by the score, 20-13. Each or-ganiiation in school either put on a stunt or helped in some wey with the pep meeting. The stunts were novel end included everything from operating on Superior to fortune telling. Three prises were offered at the pop meeting. The prises wore awarded to a student group headed by Ann taufanbarg. Y.M-C-A. and Y.W.CA Of course, the most important part of the pop meeting was the coronation scene when the ling and queen of the Homecoming wore crowned. As the orchestra played Marche Pontificals the Keg. Sam Young, and the queen. Marilyn Mercord. came down the aisles and up to the platform with their attendants. PhyCs Myhro and Joyce Kennedy, the two crown bearers, and Eugene Wirs who heeded the committee which chose the king end queen candidates. Sam and Marilyn ware then crowned by lest year's king. Reuben Johnson, who had reigned at the mack Hama coming. Their majesties were then presented to the audience. Although many students had planned to enter the ice skating events to bo held after the pop mooting, they wore disappointed because the weather was against them. The ice was too soft for skating. Many of the houses whoro students room entered the snow-sculpturing contest. The theme of the Homecoming, SLEIGH SUPERIOR, was carried out in the sculpturing. The judges awarded first prize to the House of Retrum whose prehistoric animal was auite monstrous. The House of Kurtz's Ferdinand took second prize, and the House of Jensen's basketball player who. incidently, was greatly weakened by the mild weather, copped third prize. Saturday afternoon provided the real thrills when many of the students trudged up the Mound for some grand fun tobogganing. The boys had made the toboggan tracks, and they were steep and smooth— just right for lots of fun. The wind was sharp, and almost everyone wore snowy eyelashes and eyebrows as well as frosty hair. The outstanding event of the Homecoming was the game with Superior which was played on Saturday. At 8:30 that evening our team e Superior in a game which we won, 48-35. Sam Young and Hap were high point men for the Falcons. The gym was filled to capacity and the crowd was backing the team every minute of the game. There was extra-special music between the halves provided by a pep band. After the game a big Homecoming Dance was held in South Hall Sm.
