To make the procedures and systems work toward the satisfactirm 0f the greatest num her of people is typit'al sounding of our own Dean jones, who has in a short time convinced us that she is never too busy when it comes to students- women and men alihe. She has shown us, in, her fnst year at WSCIT that she not only considers it her t'hief duty, but does take time to counsel her girls personally, vocationally, and amdemit'ally. Those of us who have had the opportunity to become acquainted with her know she dislikes being thought of as a truant affirm and welcomes students to stop into the Office of Deans for a chat. If we took these invitations to heart, we always found ourselves within a warm, friendly atmosphere eminating directly from the congeniality of this particular individual seated in the Ogice 0f Deans. Other jobs for which Dean lanes is responsible include the chaimmnship 0f the Student Life Organization Board, membership records in the Student Employment Board, participation on the Student Housing Board, Disciplinary Board, Orientation Board, Administrative Council, and Student Finam'ial Aid Committee. She is responsible for the yesz Sorial Calendar and the pertinent pmredures involved in the staging of student events. Her teaching duties lie in the instruction of Guidam'e and Business Administmtion. ROSAMOND JONES A ssistu 11 t Profcsso r of Edumtion, Dean of Women 23

In the Office ofDeans . . . For many of us, Dr. Harris, am Dean of Men and Students, has berome and will remain, a friend as well as a leather. These two seem synonymous when referring to Dean Harris. We have often been provided with a smile, a, hello, and sometimes guidanre from one we have fame to know well during the past four years. But there is much. beyond that. Dean Harris, collaborating within the aflire 0f deans, has many sides to his busy schedule. Testing services are available through the ohtice 0f deans. Not only does the office cooperate with the entire testing program, but individual test batteries can also be arranged. The ogiee is set up primarily for the provision of personal semices. Besides teaching Vocational Guidance, Dean Harris serves as a member on the Disciplinary Board, Orientation Board, Student Employment Board, Student Housing Board, the Administrative Council, and the Student Financial Aid Committee. As Dean of Men, he must be responsible for counseling and directing the men, and, as Dean of Students, he is responsible generally for the guidance of all students. BERNARD HARRIS Professor of Education, Dean of Students

MILTON A. MlaLcnick Profcsmt 1 ! Geology, Dean-Dlmsmn 0f Ft'r'lnmlogy Pioneer Patrons Thirty representatives from twenty-five Southwest- ern Wisconsin communities constitute the Pioneer Patrons. Having formed in 1959, this new group attempts to learn the various functions and projects 01 XVSCIT so that its members can carry understand- ing and good will to their home communities. The Pioneer Patron talks with the iniluential people of his community in order that they can have :1 true, mmposite picture 01' the Pioneer College as it is today. Thus, l'uture college students learn to know what they run expect 01. state colleges, and especially, of 1VSCIT. The Patrons and their husbands and wives visit the college twice :1 year as 21 group so that they can be informed of our progress. Among some 01 the busiest men on campus are Mr. Melt'her, Dean 01' Technology; Dr. Longhorn, Dean of Instruction; and Dr. Hutcheson, Dean 01 Ad- ministration. We cannot deny that among these three Deans, many 01 us are able to claim particular favor- ites. To have known and worked with these individ- uals is justificatimi enough. For Dezm Neither, this has been his thirtyeseventh year 01' work in the field 01' higher enlutution in Plzitteville. He became a member 01' 1111.1. faculty in 11123, where he taught geology until 19-11. In 1911, he became president 01 the Institute. He served as president until the merging of VV.LT. 21nd VV.S.C.P. in July, 1959. Unfortunately, we were not able to :111i1i2lte with Dezm Melcher in his years 01 past service, but now, as a group, we had one year to proudly acknowledge Dean Melcher as one 01' our HWSCIT Deans. Mr. Melcher is presently responsible for directing 2111 01 the students in Mining, Civil, and Prelingmeering, besides holding the rank 01 Pros lessor of Geology. They gain insight into such things as our long- runge building program, student employment and loans, jobs available to students graduating from various majors, the qualifications of our faculty, scholarships, and our athletic program. XVith this information, they act as publicity and good-will am- bassadors for us. Indirectly, we are able to realize that they have proved to he a significant asset to our school.
