Education consists of the reciprocal processes of learning and teaching and is primarily concerned with the achievement of a set of goals characterizing the supporting society. The effec- tiveness of the reciprocal processes is dependent upon the dedi- cation of the teachers, the learning facilities, and the motivation of the students. We are fortunate in having these ingredients for effective learning, and the success of the year 1959-60 can be largely measured in how well these opportunities for learning were utilized. Of special signifiance was the merger of the Wisconsin Institute of Technology and Wisconsin State College at Platteville that occurred on July 1, 1959. This merger was motivated by a desire for a more comprehensive curriculum, better utilization of staff and facilities, and increased opportunities in higher edu- cation for Wisconsin youth. The success of this first year of the merger can only be measured in terms of achievement of educa- tional objectives-enamely, the fulfillment of individual aspira- tions and preparation for elfective living. The satisfaction of individual needs must await student self-evaluation but a critical examination of campus living gives an indication of services to be expected in the adult world. Grades, exams, credits, and a host of extra-curricular recognitions characterize campus achieve- ments, but the true measure of the success of the year 1959-60 will need wait for future service rendered to and by students. This year has been filled with changes, orientation, and adjust- - ments but good will and harmony has characterized both faculty and student endeavors. The ease and articulation en- joyed can be largely attributed to the desire for cooperative effort by both students and faculty. Our school and the state have benefited from the well prepared plans and harmony of working together. hose who are graduating are prepared for life's endeavors by a dedicated faculty extending their best wishes and fond hopes. The future success of these 1960 graduates will bring honor to our college, and those who remain will wish to merit concern to aid in providing increased opportunities for those students who will follow. Those who remain must also strive to maintain the standards of excellence, so all may look upon their Alma Mater with justifiable pride. The Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology is proud of its heritage and tradi- tion and looks forward with a vision of great hope. BJARNE R.
