Town and Gown Premieres Season With Carmen Playing the role of a small town beauty, this young actress was well suited for the part. Discussing the course of events, these two soldiers planned their next actions. The love affair of a Spanish gypsy and the ageless appeal of opera were combined in Carmen”, Town and Gown's first presentation of the school year. The Goldovsky Grand Opera Theater performed the opera at the Civic Auditorium on Wednesday. October 23. Free busses were provided to take the approximately 1550 WSU-O students to view the production. The story concerned the lovely Carmen who lured Don Jose away from the shy Micaela and induced him to desert his military duties. Less than a year after their first meeting, the affair between the gypsy and the soldier ended in tragedy and death. Nancy Williams performed in the title role and tenor Thomas O'Leary accompanied her as Jose. 24

and Happy Pumpkin Faces The delicious smell of corn roasting over a charcoal pit and the friendly laughter were both parts of the corn roast held at Titan Court the first week of school. The corn roast was only served to introduce the students to the fun awaiting them this year at The Union sponsored Pumpkin carving contest. It was another way of urging students to participate in activities and to become acquainted with others. The winners for the second year in a row was the Alpha Phi sorority. Coming in for a first prize was this gruesome lunar pumpkin. Spocd and concentration are essential in pumpkin carving. A new trend in Halloween art is typified by this hippy prize winner. Discussion and compromise go hand in hand for a winning combination.

The breathtaking costumes added to the interest of the program. Old Mexico Invades the Civic Auditorium The color and music of Old Mexico invaded the Civic Auditorium November 18, 1968 when the Town and Gown series presented Javier de Leon's Fiesta Mexicana. Javier de Leon and his exceptional cast spared themselves nothing in recreating the ancient rituals as well as the music and dances of Hispanic Mexico. The happy exhilaration of the artists, the beauty of the costumes, and the intriguing music and dances of the Mayans and Aztecs combined to create an enjoyable program of interest to all who attended. The Door Dance was ono of the Ceremonial Dancos of Coatlicueh the company performed.
