This yeor we have been happy and fortunate to have so many men who served in the Armed Forces in our student body. Tests have shown and grades have substantiated that the veterans are here to learn; they top the student body. This fact indicates that age and experience can accomplish more than opportunity, sometimes. Not many of these veterans, however, are joining the ranks of teachers. Can it be that they see the detriments of low salary, uncertainty of tenure, and other drawbacks; or are the fields they see distantly, greener than actuality will reveal? Oh, yes! I almost forgot to tell you that the name of the race is the one which Civilization and Catastrophe are running; Catastrophe has won some of the heats too, and apparently by greater margins than Civilization, whose form is poor but whose stamina seems pretty good, has been able to show. FORREST R. POLK President THE PRESIDENT AT HIS DESK 19

FOR KENT R. FOLK PRESIDENT Veteran World War I The President's Message There iso race in progress; the track extends through Great Britain, France, Russia and her satellite nations, Palestine, India, China, Africa, South America, North America—and Oshkosh. This race has a name, well known because the contest has been going on for a long time. Now and then some of the contestants attempt to foul their fellow sprinters, and they never fail to damage the side for which all yell with their mouths but which many sabotage with their acts. We should like more teachers, and better teachers; all of us; that is, until the time comes to quit talking and writing and to begin paying what the job is worth. And these teachers are the trainers of the team which we hope will win. But as we see the problem here, the track on which the contestants run seems to be of more importance than the runners (or trainers either). So there is no money to pay teachers adequately; there is no patience with the request for more teachers to help meet the expanded load and to provide what veterans and other students wish and need; costs are too high to build buildings which have been needed for decades; and any old equipment ought to be good enough in a teachers college. But perhaps you believe, as I do, that a teacher ought to be well-trained, well-educated, well-paid, and consequently well-respected. If you do believe this, then say so, whenever and wherever the occasion is ripe for such an expression. 18
