In the early fall, two young students came to Oshkosh Teachers College and registered for the first year. Puzzled, eager, sure, yet timid, they followed each the other from one room to the next and met many bent on the same mission--some from the country, others from towns

Ait. £a.ti -$• (Zlemanl At the close of the first quarter of this college year, Mr. Earl A. Clemans retired from service in Oshkosh State Teachers College. His leaving culminated thirty-eight years of varied contributions to the college, ranging from high classroom performance to administrative work of many forms. Born a few miles north of Oshkosh in Clemansville, a community center named after his grandfather. Mr. Clemans is a native son deeply attached to the life of the Fox Valley. With this background, he has had unusual opportunity to know the history of this area and great interest in Winnebago County and Wisconsin lore. Always absorbed in nature study, he imparted an admirable earthiness to his academic course work. Mr. Clemans opened his career in education as principal of the state graded school at Fredonia, Wisconsin. After graduation from the University of Michigan in 1901, he taught science courses in the high school at Bay City, Michigan, and later in Detroit. He joined the staff of Oshkosh Normal School in 1906 as an instructor in physics and elementary science. In later years, courses in agriculture, geology, and geography of Wisconsin were a part of his schedule of instruction. A record of Mr. Clemans's services to the college reminds one of a panorama of the history of OSTC. One thinks of the Mark Hopkins tradition in education when he hears that Mr. Clemans played forward on the faculty basketball team for several years; that he was field marshal of the Audubon Society and organizer of the Demetrian Club for the study of agriculture. He served for many years as the chairman of the athletic council and as a member of the social life committee. During certain periods in his connection with the college, he acted in the following capacities: as dean of men. as director of the secondary division, as vice-president, and as acting president. The students hope that, though Mr. Clemans's formal connection with the college has terminated, his informal contacts will long continue. As teacher and friend, he is an OSTC tradition; and oncoming generations of students should know Mr. Clemans and should have an appreciation of his contributions to Wisconsin education.
