WE DEDICATE THIS QUIVER a o'kszi ■f) Itiltute to Ttiend and “Teacket WISCONSIN EDUCATOR . . . close to the land . . . interested in the rivers, the birdlore, the regional history, very fittingly chairman of the program for the Fox River Tercentennial. You are to us our roots in Wisconsin. SPEAKER FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS . . . known for stories and more stories, amazingly pat. for economy and wit in the telling of them; appearing before clubs, conventions. Boy Scout troops, men's associations, making awards, introducing speakers, providing the after-dinner pleasantry. You make us often ask: where did ''Clem'' get that story? FRIEND OF MAN . . . symbol of easy poise with no starchy pretensions, of readiness with soft answer that turneth away wrath; knower of youth, considerate and pre-eminent in kindness. You mean to us the human touch in teaching. As you retire after almost thirty-nine years of effective service in the Oshkosh State Teachers College, we, your colleagues, in affection salute you. Ait. £a.ti -$• (Zlemanl At the close of the first quarter of this college year, Mr. Earl A. Clemans retired from service in Oshkosh State Teachers College. His leaving culminated thirty-eight years of varied contributions to the college, ranging from high classroom performance to administrative work of many forms. Born a few miles north of Oshkosh in Clemansville, a community center named after his grandfather. Mr. Clemans is a native son deeply attached to the life of the Fox Valley. With this background, he has had unusual opportunity to know the history of this area and great interest in Winnebago County and Wisconsin lore. Always absorbed in nature study, he imparted an admirable earthiness to his academic course work. Mr. Clemans opened his career in education as principal of the state graded school at Fredonia, Wisconsin. After graduation from the University of Michigan in 1901, he taught science courses in the high school at Bay City, Michigan, and later in Detroit. He joined the staff of Oshkosh Normal School in 1906 as an instructor in physics and elementary science. In later years, courses in agriculture, geology, and geography of Wisconsin were a part of his schedule of instruction. A record of Mr. Clemans's services to the college reminds one of a panorama of the history of OSTC. One thinks of the Mark Hopkins tradition in education when he hears that Mr. Clemans played forward on the faculty basketball team for several years; that he was field marshal of the Audubon Society and organizer of the Demetrian Club for the study of agriculture. He served for many years as the chairman of the athletic council and as a member of the social life committee. During certain periods in his connection with the college, he acted in the following capacities: as dean of men. as director of the secondary division, as vice-president, and as acting president. The students hope that, though Mr. Clemans's formal connection with the college has terminated, his informal contacts will long continue. As teacher and friend, he is an OSTC tradition; and oncoming generations of students should know Mr. Clemans and should have an appreciation of his contributions to Wisconsin education. In the early fall, two young students came to Oshkosh Teachers College and registered for the first year. Puzzled, eager, sure, yet timid, they followed each the other from one room to the next and met many bent on the same mission--some from the country, others from towns both north and south - -Made new friends to last for years to come. They strolled about the campus walks to red brick buildings: Science Hall, Training School; the College Library; The Campus Shoppe where students meet to discuss all campus gossip; The Dean’s Cottage for housing advice--College life had begun. College Walk Views of the Administration Building Training School Campus President's House College Hall The Pollack House A They had chosen well the division for their special undertakings: Pre-Pro, Secondary, or the branches of the Elementary - -Had entered in the Arts and Letters, Math, and all the Sciences - -the Humanities and Language. Tests and papers, marks and credits had been well considered. v Established now, these new students entered classes, freshman classes, prelude to the major courses and the minors they have chosen - -Met their new professors, made new friends--Worked in labs with slides or beakers, studied hard on long assignments - -Envied all the upperclassmen and wished soon to be among them. A 'The fttelldent 5 AleMaje A few days ago in a high school not far from Oshkosh. I talked with a young man who said he wished to become a teacher; it was an encouraging experience and one for which I was unprepared. I am used to hearing young women say they would like to become secretaries, nurses, clerks in stores, social workers, or just get a job to earn money, for the thought is apparently not far back in mind that a temporary job is all that is needed; they really wish to be happily married though they have never come to grips with the accomplishments necessary to be and remain a successful housewife. Young men now are baffled by what lies ahead but in other days they would be doctors, lawyers, business men, inventors, engineers, politicians, and farmers; some were willing to teach as a stepping stone to these glamorous professions. Even those who become teachers often evolve into indifferent administrators where teaching skills and techniques are forgotten and manipulation of records and budgets come to be learned and magnified into important realities, aping business, industry, and commerce. r I i E FORREST R. POLK PRESIDENT It is probable that if all engaged in teaching were wholehearted, enthusiastic teachers, one-half the number now so engaged could do a better job than is now done by all. While we this year glorify teaching as a profession, let us fondly hope that girls will see that understanding and leading children is of inestimable value to society and to them as individuals; and that young men will see that one can live a life of great satisfaction and worth, not by renunciation of the chance to become wealthy but by consecration to an ideal. And so I conclude that where one was found there may be others; I trust they are among this year's class to whom I now speak in the Quiver of 1945. A CECILLE J. BARNETT Came to OSTC in 1936 M.S.. Service List Editor. 1945 QUIVER This volume contains the record of another war year. Collegiate activities both social and professional are curtailed. The only feature of the book to be increased is the Service List which has grown to 1218 names. The college life of all students is the theme of the book. Two people who entered college four or more years ago have been chosen to represent all college students. At the time of their entrance, college life was more normal with a big student enrollment, dances, proms, and athletics. The student body has seen many changes in these last years. It has seen cadets come and go, enrollment shrink, and college activities decline. There is a seriousness now; and a desire to share responsibility and to get the most from what we can create through our own efforts. The members of the staff wish to extend their personal thanks to each and everyone who has in any way contributed to the success of this yearbook: to President Forrest R. Polk, Dr. James H. Smith, Mr. Rolla J. McMahon, and Miss Florence Palmer; and especially to Mr. Nevin S. James, Manuscript Critic, and Mrs. Ethel J. Behncke, Quiver Adviser. We hope that the 1945 Quiver will give you enjoyment today, and in the years to come when college days are over. RUBY LARSEN, Editor MARCELLA HOEFFS, Manuscript Editor RUTH MECHELKE. Service List 41 Then came the vaunted practice teaching earlier than usual on the new acceleration, planned to meet the need for more new teachers. They worked hard at the instruction of their classes, liked the pupils, watched them grow - - And with others long discussed them. 1 Then for some, school no longer--A clear call to service rather. He, like others, left the college, worked at other types of training. To our classrooms came contingents of the Army Air Cadets --Lived an d drilled upon the campus; then departed to great centers - -Thence to fields of action on the many battlefronts. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Mr. Robert J. Grant, Principal and Ninth Grade Critic Miss Louise E. Scott, Eighth Grade Critic Miss Harriet Lockwood, Seventh Grade Critic The School City, Adviser. Miss Scott The School City has held three elections this year. At the first election Lieutenant Jack Rhyner, a former training school boy, installed the officers. There have been many different types of programs. The patriotic programs were sponsored by the ninth grade. One very constructive accomplishment was the revision of the school city constitution to parallel the government of the City of Oshkosh. The officers include a mayor, a judge, a clerk and councilmen, elected from the various wards into which each grade is divided. The Arrow, School Paper, published four times a year, and The Clarion, School Yearbook, Adviser, Miss Lockwood. The seventh grade prepared a party for Valentine's Day. The eight grade presented a playlet, Christmas in Dixie, written by Jean and Jane Loper. A debate on the subject . Should Eighteen Year Olds be Allowed to Vote? , was held by the eighth grade. Six honor students from the ninth grade, under the supervision of Mr. Grant, are responsible for the raising and lowering of the flag. 45 Placement Upper Picture: Mr. C. C. Bishop. Superintendent of Schools. Oshkosh. Wisconsin. Dorothy McDaniols. Lower Picture: Miss Ostertag. Helen Beckman. Doris Kramer. Peggy Nowborry. Placement of graduates is handled by a faculty committee with the Director of Training serving as chairman. At the time that this article is written, about eighty per cent of the available graduates in the rural, elementary and secondary departments have already been placed for next year. Salaries vary from about SHOO to SI800 per year in the elementary division, most of the inexperienced degree graduates receiving from SI450 to SI550. The experienced degree graduates are receiving from SI600 to SI800 depending upon the salary schedule of the city and the number of years in the field. In the secondary division, the salaries of the inexperienced graduates vary from $1540 to S1800. The demand for secondary grduates has been strong this spring. There seems to be a shortage particularly in the fields of mathematics and science. High school graduates who are interested in secondary teaching and who are strong in science and mathematics will do well to prepare for those subjects on account of the shortage in those fields. All available candidates who graduate in June from the kindergartenprimary and primary departments have already been placed and many calls for teachers in those fields are continuing to come into the placement office. 46 Dn ll. Jfetvice The following list contains the names of former students who are in various branches of the armed forces of our nation. Undoubtedly it is incomplete, in spite of every effort to avoid omissions. OSTC is represented in every part of the world where Americans are serving. We wish to pay special honor to those killed or missing in action and to the prisoners of war. DIED IN SERVICE Marvin K. Boiler; Private, Army Tank Corps. Mr . Jane Boiler, Route 1, Oshkosh.
