Freedom of Thought America is fighting to preserve freedom to think and to express truth without fear. Even though barbarism and despotism should again obscure Europe, America will remain as “the last best hope of earth”, a nation faithful to Jefferson's oath: I have sworn upon the altar of (iod eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” Adrlink Winki.kk

The President ’s Message J . vhar a»; when the Quiver apjieared we were already at war with the Axis Powers hut its effects were only moderately apparent here, though mam of our vouug men had put on the uniforms of one or another of the services. And soon voting women too l egan to respond to the insistent call for auxiliary services. The number of graduates and former students who have thus left us. numbers into tlu hundreds. We shall pro liable never have a complete list, but now we pay our tribute of respect, admiration, and kindly recollection to each of them, known to us or unknown. We shall have few young men remaining here after this Commencement. All of them will be under age or incapacitated, and lx it further noted, no one but themselves can ever know the disappointment and heart-burning that they must endure; and yet every one is preparing himself to do what he can as chemist, physicist, teacher, physician, dentist, or industrial or professional worker. The same is true of the young women. So different now from that of a few years ago is the situation in regard to teaching jiositions. We cannot supply the insistent demand; and even those who have but partially completed their courses are offered fiositions on every hand. In times of stress and strain, the dependence of the nation is on education and training, it is evident now that a modern nation cannot pay too much attention to the education of its children and young people. but the nation as a whole was reluctant to acknowledge any such obligation a short while ago. There have l een provided ample educational opportunities but lor too many they remain a hope and a vision There must not lx such a waste of intelligence, brain-power and genius. The College is engaged in furthering the training of a large quota of men who will eventually lx found in that most im|x rtant branch of our military forces, the Army Air Corps. These men quartered in our Training School Building are a line addition to our College; their spirit, eagerness, discipline, and morale add inestimably to ours. The officers, non-coms, and men bring a feeling and awareness of impending effort to us. which makes our duties have meaning and justification. Several faculty memlxjrs are in service, thus far in teaching and administrative work, but others may shortly see combat service. We watch and wait, appreciating their sacrifices, and confident that our people will not again waste the hard-won heritage of battles fought to keep us safe and free. Forrkst R.
