Does it contain hope, frustration, joy, de- spair? What does our Uni- versity contain? Our University has all the elements of the surrounding world. Yet it has more, it has the element that makes a uni- versity a distinct and unique part of our world-the ele- ment of inquiryg that burning desire to learn, to develop more and better techniques of learning itself. For the student with a hearty appetite the University provides 11 wealth of facilities for the dispensing of knowl- edge. lt even offers another university, the Free Universi- ty, which offers a variety of courses not offered in the regular University. Our University is forever expanding to meet the challenges of an expanding popu- lation. The tearing down of the old makes way for the new, but it must not be for- gotten that great institutions develop from solid tradition. s..., X .Q 3,7- ji x, ,T , , ,4,, 2 . It also makes a cool, refreshing place to study instead of be- ing inside the library or dormitory room. Special Events Cheers of enthusiasm could be heard early in September, as members of the four sororities competed in the annual Powder Puff Olympics. The competition was tight from beginning to end with the Delta Zetas holding an early lead only to be overtaken by the Alpha Omicron Pis who clinched the victory by winning the last event of the day. Following Alpha Omicron Pi were the Delta Zetas, Alpha Xi Deltas, and the Alpha Phis. Kristie Gates, a junior at La Crosse State, was chosen to reign as Miss Oktoberfest, 1968. Lou Davies, a sophomore, was chosen as first runner-up. Other finalists were Joyce Kowalewski, second runner-upg jo Splinter, third runner-upg and Gail Tomasino, fourth runner-up. All are of La Crosse State University. The usual panty raid that takes place during Home- coming occurred instead during Oktoberfest this year. An estimated four hundred men participated in the raid. A A+ G4 Black Theatre This winter LeR0i jones brought his players and black theatre to XWSU-LaCrosse. Although jones himself did not appear, two plays were presented. One of these plays was Ifzmrreclimz and Mifplfzced Love. It was a telescoped history of the black mang his early culture and peaceful reli- gion, the enslavement of his mind by the white beast, and his eventual spiritual re- birth. The rebirth is started by a black mil- itant who insists that his brothers and sisters purge themselves of whiteman's bad habits and start acting like beautiful black people. The other play jello also stressed the need for black imagination separate from white imagination. LeRoi jones explains his attitudes towards art and the black conflict in these words: There are re- gions of compromise so attractive, we daily long to filth our minds with their fame. And all the songs of our handsome gener- ation fall clanging like stones in the empty darkness of their heads. lf? ! 3 'Q ' . , ,W ,K . i-32.91 .V ' JM ..f L' 1 . 2 1' 5 . As an act of mercy, he frees the bird. The crane turns into the form of a woman, Akkika. She offers him thepeace of human love if he will take an oath and renounce all forms of violence forever. He takes the oath, knowing that if he breaks it, Akkika will be destroyed. The play depicts the struggle in Uto between his warrior nature and the inner peace of his new found love. The cast consisted of jaqui Burns as Akkiko and Willard Samuels as Uto. Other members of the cast were Laurie Becker, Colleen Gutzke, and Richard Downing. The play was directed by Robert Joyce. gn. Vickroy, who for fifteen seasons led the Indians to the field, retired at the end of the 1968 season and moved up into the position of Athletic Director. The season began with a pair of losses and ended the same way. But inbetween, the Indians played some fine foot- ball. This is not to say that the Indians did not play fine football in their lossesfthey did sometimes, but they didn't play tough enough, enough of the time. In the season opener with St. Iohn's University, the Indi- ans held their own defense with the Johnnies but their offense failed totmaterialize. Against the Wisconsin State University champions, Oshkosh, the story was the same thing. Then against conference co-champion Platteville the LCU eleven seemed to find its stride as its defense, especially Tom Funk, played an outstanding game. The offense also seemed to start pull- ing itself together for the 14-6 win. The Maroon and Gray then won four of their next five games, with wins over Stevens Point, Stout, River Falls, and a 53-O stomp over superior. In between a loss to St. Norbert's College marred the record. In the last two weeks, when the Indians had visions of the conference championship, they found it hard-sledding with a heart-breaking 26-20 loss to Whitewater and the ensuing let-down loss to Eau Claire 20-14. Dan Meinert, the captain and middle linebacker, along with Gary Gardiner, a fast-moving safety, were named to the defensive first unit in the All-conference selections. Second team honors went to Ricky Falaschi, the Indians' ace quarterback, and to Gary Klug, a hard- running fullback, on offense and to George Grbich, a defensive tackle, and Tom Funk, a defensive end. The In- dians slid to an 8-12 season record and a 5-11 conference slate, which was good for sixth place, but have a brighter future with the co-recipient of the Most Valuable Player award just a freshman. Len Sullivan, only a freshman from Phoenix, Ill,, tied senior joel Hafner for total points with 209, took scoring average title with 14.9, was the top rebounder with 148 and was named the co-holder of the Most Valuable Player award. Lee Young, the sparkplug guard guard of the team, who came to life late in the season, was named co-recipient of the MVP award with Sullivan and was also named the winner of the Sterns award for most improved player. Mike Heideman, Dave Aller, john Selbo and Steve Newman also came on at times to either lead the Indians in scoring or in rebounding. The La Crosse State '5' had three double wins, taking White- water, Oshkosh, and Lea College twice each and also came out victorious once against each Winona State and Superior. The Indians started the season with a win against tough Winona State, but then fell to five straight losses, including their first three WSUC tests. Then Hey's hard-courters won six of their next 10 pulling to a 7-9 slate. The late-siason skid syndrome then struck the Indians, throwing five straight losses at the La Crosse squad. La Crosse finished its season as it started-with a win-over Whitewater. La Crosse has more to look forward to than just one player, however, with the return of Sullivan. During the 1968-1969 season, the gymnasts posted a 12-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of the University of Wisconsin in the season opener. The team, coached by ,lim Howard, placed fifth in the NAIA tournament during the 1967-1968 season and should do well again in the 1968-1969 season. The gymnasts were also favored to repeat their 1968 Wisconsin State University Conference title. CThis book went to press before the 1969 conference or na- tional tournamentsj During the 1968 national meet, Eric Johnson captured All- American honors in the side horse with a second place, while Steve Berger took a fourth place in the trampoline and Rich Padgett took a ninth in the vaulting or long horse. Rich Zaleski, the squads MVP, placed eighth in the all-around com- petition at the meet. In 1969 the star of the show was sophomore Steve Berger, who consistently placed high in the floor exercise, long horse and the trampoline. Other standouts include Eric johnson, Ralph Druecke on the parallel bars and the horizontal bar, Don Von Ebers on the parallel bars and the trampoline, Dan Perrodin on the still rings, and Dave Woodward on the long horse. Mike Ryan, Gordie Schaller and Steve Schulz were the top Indians besides Berger in the floor exercise. The Indians swept to 12 straight victories after losing their opener to the Badgers. The victories were over Mankato, Osh- kosh, Eau Claire, River Falls, Whitewater, St. Cloud, Stout, Stevens Point, Northern Iowa, Platteville, Superior, and Mil- waukee Technical College. Mike Ryan fabowe and lower rightj shows some moves on the mat in the floor exercise. Ryan is one of Coach jim Howard's top performers in the floor ex. Track LaCrosse turned out one of the finest track teams in a number of years in 1968, although there was no conference champion- ship in the picture. In the conference meet, the Indians took a close second to Oshkosh 61-59. The crucial race was the mile relay with LaCrosse one of the favorites. But Platteville's outstanding effort nipped the Indians by .3 seconds. Oshkosh also squeaked past the In- dians in the mile relay by .1 seconds. AA first place would have given LCU the championship. In other competition, the Indians won a triangular with Stout and Eau Claire, and a dual with Platteville. LaCrosse also placed second in the Bethel Relay and the Stevens Point Invitational. Third places were garnered in the Norseman Relays and the WSUC Relays. UWM and Luther were the only teams to beat the Indians in dual competition. In the first meet of the year the Indians placed 10th in the Southern Minnesota Invitational at Mankato. Stan Druckrey, only a sophomore, had a brilliant year skim- ming the hurdles. He set two conference records and figured in five school records. Druckrey set conference records in both the 440 yard intermediate hurdles and the 120 yard high hurdles. The 400 meter hurdles, 120 yard high hurdles, and the 440 yard hurdle school records were broken by Druckrey. He also added school records in the 480 yard high hurdle shuttle and the 480 yard low hurdle shuttle relays. Dan Blanke, Ned Pellman, and Mike Cox teamed with Druckrey to shape the new records in the shuttle relays. Rick Reiss tossed the javelin, Pellman high jumped, and Tom Busse vaulted to school records. Three relay teams also bet- tered previous marks. Tom Crapisi, Scott Lindgren, Phil Boushe, and Larry Hardy broke the two mile record. Lindgren, Leadley, Crapisi, and Paul Dale broke the distance medley record. H Baseball There were smiles all over campus during the '68 baseball season-at least at the end of the season. The Indians lost six of the first eight games but came back to win six of the final nine games and miss the conference championship by a single run in a 2-1 loss to Oshkosh. The first three losses of the season came at the hands of the top small college team in the country-Parsons. After splitting doubleheaders with Super- ior and River Falls in conference action, the Indians swept a doubleheader from Whitewater. Then in a do-or-die situation the Indians swept a second twinbill from Eau Claire. The biggest game of the season came on May 17-a double- header with conference leaders, Oshkosh. The Indians took the first game 5-4 in the eighth inning and then lost the second on a seventh inning home run 2-1. Oshkosh hadn't hit a home run all season until the LaCrosse doubleheader. Named in post-season honors were Dave Sadowski, Dale Tyl- ka, and Craig Kusick. Sadowski was named to the WSUC first team, while Tylka and Kusick were named to the All-District 14 second team. The Lane Goodwin-coached linksters also placed second in four of the triangulars, going down to third only against Whitewater and Platteville. The highlight of the season was a fifth place finished in the conference tournament, led by Dick Martin's 160 for two rounds on the de- manding Madison Cherokee COUFSE. Other top swingers on the Indian squad were: Gerald Blaha Q80j, Dick Martin Q80.1j, Pete Hougen f8O.5j, Larry Hiller 4815, and Bob Smith C81.5j. .Ex ,AM :Ia,A:i i'a.,v?,,r, ,Q 1 W: f A W WV , .,.V f Myfgyyif 11 ,, , . ,Hamm 1 I , K , , 37 ,krr MM Vk,. Then beginning with the Indians' match with Stevens Point, the netmen came to light. Under the coaching of Linn Rockwood, who has since moved back to his home in Utah, LCU beat Point 5-4, won its own quadrangular with Bethel, Eau Claire, and Platte- ville without the loss of a set, blanked Stout 9-0 and whipped Platteville in a dual 8-1. The Indians also placed third in a quadrangular meet with White- water, University of Northern Iowa, and Platteville. Then came the big weekend-conference. The In- dians were looked to for no higher than a distant third place finish. The LaCrosse team proved to be no match for the powerful Oshkosh team, which won easily, but came within one point of taking second place from Vifhitewater. Oshkosh won with 22 points, followed by Whitewater's 15 and LaCrosse's 14. Pete Wztis led the Indian point-getters as he won the conference number four singles championship. Terry Murphy and Rick Fatura also gained the finals in number two and number six singles but fell to Oshkosh players. Fatura, another freshman, won 13 straight matches in the number six singles spot before losing in the finals of the conference tournament. He did, how- ever, lose one match in his only excursion at the number five singles position against St. Cloud. In post season honors, Murphy and freshman Iohn Pincsak were named honorable mention in District 14 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for their runner-up spot in conference dou- bles play at number two doubles. 1'--.t, in ,e 4 1' ,E x SJ , 7 Tw 4' ff 9955-5'r 9555.9 aftsssa sits fl 44- 42 ig' 5. I thought I'd take this opportunity to editorialize a bit, since I did not do so in any of the previous years. My thanks goes out to my entire staff, especially Steve Reardon, Kathy Casey and Linda Fintak. ' Steve has been on the staff as long as myself and served as editor of the index section all four years. The index is a tedious and time consuming job, especially at the end of the year, but Steve waded through and did an excellent job. Kathy saved me twice, last year and this, from missing a deadline. She has served as senior section editor for the last three years. Last is Linda Fintak who did the brunt of the work on this yearls annual. She deserves as much or more credit than myself for getting the book out. Without her there would have been many a sleepless night. Linda doubled as Managing Editor and editor of the special events section while also doing the entire features section. The following were also indispensable in creating and building this year's book: Mr. joseph Zobin, adviser, Don Rezek -and Bob Seaquist, photographers, Audio-Visual Center, Donnette Hollman, cover design, Ellickson Studio, the La Crosse Tribune, Taylor Publishing Company and the Publications Board which is composed of Mr. joseph' Zobin, Dr. 'John Jenks, Miss Patricia Muller, Mr. William Goldsborough, Dean David Hogue, Janel Bladow, Secretary, Steve Solberg, Georgene Kuzma, Dennis Betchel, Dennis Lowenhagen, and Al Thurman, Chair- man. ,.f.:Vs,faH' Mug: V, .- ..
