To our faithful advisor, Mr. Grey Konrad, we, the staff, do dedicate our 1950 LACROSSE year- book. Mr. Konrad graduated from the University of Wisconsin with his B.S. and Ph.M. degree. In 1946 he came to LaCrosse. That same year he took the reins of the yearbook and has been the advisor ever since. Much of his free time has been spent with t he staffs to produce the yearly editions without receiving any credit. To him we give our appreciation. EDUCATION Chemistry G. Schultz, D. McCoy, J. Beekman INTRODUCTION We came to college in search of a wider and more varied experience with a specialization of teaching for a profession. La Crosse, as a teacher ' s college offers a variety of majors and minors to choose from and all the necessary education courses to graduate with a degree in teaching. Teach- ing is an art based on the fact of a subject and the nature of child develop- ment. Communications M. Haase, M. Jones, G. O ' Connor, J. Messerschmidt Phy. Ed. J. Krismer, R. Paulson, B. Spaltholz, L. Reynolds, O. Navis Physical Educafion A varied program is offered to cover most physical activities in which a major or minor is offered. To the men ' s course, coaching is added. Basketball, Tumbling, Dance, Archery, Tennis, Football, Field and Track, and Swimming are only a few of the interests. All students, the first two years, are required to take courses in this field. Physics R. Shepard. B. McCann, R. Feurstein, D. Lueck WE ENTER TO LEARN Anatomy B. Andreoli, J. Olsen, A. Batikis Science Several fields of science are offered. Majors are obtained in general science and physi- cal science with minors in Bi- ology, Geography, and Math- ematics. Some of the courses include Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Conserva- tion, Anatomy, Trigonometry, and Calculus. Hisfory Students majoring or minor- ing in history select courses such as American and Europ- ean histories. Contemporary World, Sociology, Political Science, and Early Europe. All students receive some part of this field to broaden their education. 10 GO FORTH TO SERVE Organ Lessons F. LaPointe Art Appreciation S. Regnier, K. Porter Finer Arts A music minor is offered with Rhythms, Conducting, Music Appreciation, and Chor- us and Band credits. The school has purchased a new organ. Lessons are given to interested students in their free time. A variety of art classes are offered for student appreciation. English The freshman finds himself enrolled in a communication class to start his college ca- reer. This includes composi- tion and speech. If he is further interested in this line, he may major in English or minor in English, Speech, and one of the languages, French or Spanish. Some of the cours- es offered are Shakespeare, Survey, Speech Correction, Stage Production, and History of the English Language. 11 inj II MMniv ■B jC - ' P Am S 1 i m - ijg) j i |k  i ij i ' ,J H iylfl H l First Aid E. Fenn General Education The program of the school is divided into five departments: Secondary Education, Rural Education, Physical Education, Elementary Education, and Specials. The Specials only begin their work here and transfer to other colleges to receive further training in their field. All students grad- uating from La Crosse are qualified teachers and have had the necessary courses in Psychology, Tests and Measurements, and Practice Teaching. Zoology G. Olson, R. Uischner, S. Regnier 12 ADMINISTRATION President Views Progress There have been several innovations in our activities this year. Some are more important than others but all have served to differentiate this college year from others. We be- gan in September with two new handbooks. The Indian , published jointly by the Campus Controls Council and the college administration, with an attractive cover designed by Bob Weiss, supplied new students with important information concerning the college and its practices and traditions. In- formation of special interest to women appeared in a handbook published by the Women ' s Self Government Association. Both books served a valuable purpose. The organizations respons- ible for them are to be commended for their initiative and enterprise. We hope for a repeat next year. Freshmen who enrolled in teacher training courses found themselves in a new class called communication. This re placed the traditional English composition and speech founda- mentals. It was well received and will be continued next year with improvements. Our assembly hour was changed. Assemblies were no longer crowded into the day ' s activities. Evening programs set a more leisurely pace and there were reserved seats and ushers. They gave a new tone to the series. They will be continued. For the first time we had a Dad ' s Day. Sponsored by the Campus Controls Council under the chairmanship of Dick Evans, it was a tremendous success. Dads and sons alike were unanimous in the belief that it should become an annual affair. The Women ' s Self Government Association dinner was another first. With Lois Hardt as toastmistress and May Roach of Stevens Point State Teachers College as speaker, it was the high light of the organization ' s activities for the year and will become a traditional event. Sponsored also by the Women ' s Self Government Association was a breakfast for freshmen on the first Sunday morning of the college year after which upper classmen helped new students to find the church of their choice. There will be another next year. This is only a partial list of new activities but it is suffic- ient to demonstrate that we are not a static group. It is en- couraging to note that all are likely to become permanent features. President Mitchell PRESIDENT REXFORD S. The Indians, despite their even split in 12 league games had the best defensive record in the league holding their opponents to 51.7 points per game. Eddie Olson led the team in individual scoring with 184 points. He was followed closely by John Schumann, Ace Loomis, Jerry Miller, and Glenn Schwanberg, in that order. The Indians had a well balanced scor- ing attack throughout their 21-game season. Coach Clark Van Galder has 10 returning lettermen to build his next years team with, plus several boys from the freshman team. Jerry Miller and Glenn Schwanberg, playing their last game for La Crosse, scored 18 and 17 points respectively in a 60-40 rout of Superior, to round out their college careers in a verv successful fashion. La Crosse won the conference championship for the second consecutive year by defeating Stevens Point twice and Mil- waukee once. In the first meet a well balanced team from Augsburg defeated the harriers. Developing rapidly La Crosse downed Stevens Point with Ralph Tesnow and Stan Plumb tying for first place. In a return meet Gil Felton joined Tesnow and Plumb in a three-way tie for first. Felton also copped a first place in the Milwaukee meet. Row 1: Stan Plumb, Bob Baty, L. Bjorn, D. Martin. Row 2: W. Among these is the all-time scoring record which was broken by Marv Grier. His mark of 287 points bettered the record of 247 points set in 1943. Other shattered records in- clude the 200-yd. breast stroke broken by Bob Siesco, and the 400-yd. free style relay, which was broken by a team consisting of Smith, Pack, Buschatz, and Grier. Ev Pack was elected captain of the 1950-51 team. Buschatz and Siesco were co-captains of this years team. 115 r Ray Fellows Point Winner 1 ■4Si Free Stylers In Action 116 f ' ' ' ' ¥ Row 1: F. Paced by Jim DeMerit the Indians pushed the Milwaukee Gulls hard for the state championship only to lose by 17 points. Under the direction of Floyd Gautsch, the thinclads breezed thru the seasons opener winning first place in a triangular meet with Dubuque and Luther. Oshkosh and Winona were the next to fall as the Indians won both dual rheets. A stubborn Milwaukee team went all out and handed the Indians their first loss in a dual meet. In a triangular meet with Milwaukee and Whitewater, La Crosse finished second to Mil- waukee again. Outstanding performers were DeMerit in the hurdles and shot put, Blandin in the 100 and broad jump. Thus it performs a valuable service to the stu- dents of La Crosse State Teacher College. It not only seeks to encourage creative writing by the students, but it also serves as a medium of pub- lication for those who have already begun writ- ing creatively. It strives to encourage careful craftsmanship among young writers in the absence of the haste often necessary in journal- ism. Furthermore, the Fledgling measures suc- cess not in monetary return but in the terms of high literary standards. The editorial board for ' 49- ' 50 was made up of C. Ashley Ellefson, Earl Lewis, Robert Linse, Richard Meyer, and Donald Wang. 180 MISCELLANEOUS H O M E C O M I N G Queen Sue Miller THE ROYALTY S. Millfi, B. Bullard, M. Lindberg, P. Vickory, N.
