Jrld litlf PH' lthe york L L- Student Health Service Miss M. McGrath, Dr. E. Sexton. The Student Health Service has, since its organization in 1938, broadened its philosophy and enlarged its functions in keeping with current trends in health concepts. Originally the health service was designed to care for the ill student away from home as well as to determine the health status of the individual student. Today the health service, under the direction of the college nurse and a committee, aims to prevent illness whenever possible, to teach the need for correcting physical defects and to help the student to live within the limits of his capacities. To this end students are given physical examinations, consultation with outside physicians when student health facilities are inadequate for diagnosis or treatment, conference with the student health service physician relative to the correction of physical defects and limitations of academic, work and recreational loads in line with the student's capacities. Provision is made for house calls to the ill student by a physician of his own choosing and for hospitalization. Students in teacher training courses are urged to take an active interest in their own health and in the facilities of the health service, to increase awareness of their responsibilities in the school health program.
