Results of these tests provide the basis for counseling veterans regarding occuphe tional areas and levels which should be considered by the individual in determining his plans for rk future. The La Crosse Center handles the Veterans' Administration counseling and guldance W0 for the La Crosse area which includes th ' e immediate nine C95 surrounding counties. Mr. John L- Bryce, former graduate of La Crosse State Teachers Coll ' ege is Chief of the Center. 12 Jrld litlf PH' lthe york L L- Student Health Service Miss M. McGrath, Dr. E. Sexton. The Student Health Service has, since its organization in 1938, broadened its philosophy and enlarged its functions in keeping with current trends in health concepts. Originally the health service was designed to care for the ill student away from home as well as to determine the health status of the individual student. Today the health service, under the direction of the college nurse and a committee, aims to prevent illness whenever possible, to teach the need for correcting physical defects and to help the student to live within the limits of his capacities. To this end students are given physical examinations, consultation with outside physicians when student health facilities are inadequate for diagnosis or treatment, conference with the student health service physician relative to the correction of physical defects and limitations of academic, work and recreational loads in line with the student's capacities. Provision is made for house calls to the ill student by a physician of his own choosing and for hospitalization. Students in teacher training courses are urged to take an active interest in their own health and in the facilities of the health service, to increase awareness of their responsibilities in the school health program. The 'Redmen scored midi-way through the second period after a series of line plunges had carried the ball deep into 1ndiansTerritory. Porky Finn, diminutive quarterbsacklthen stepped back and passedf to Bob Forrest, giant end, who gathered the oval in and carried 1t'to pay dirt. Finn's attempt at placement failed and St. Mary's led 61-10. The Indians came back with plenty of drive to start the second half. On successive first downs, the Indians worked the ball down to the St. lVIary's 20-yard line. At this point the Red line put on the brakes, forcing Gould Nichols to step back and pass to Bob Baur, who made a nice catch and scampered over to what appeared to be an apparent touchdown. However, the Indians were guilty of clipping on the play and St. Mary's took over on their own 18-yard line. The Indians never threatened after that and both teams battled on even terms the remainder of the ball game. Superior-20. La Crosse-0 Superior Yellowjackets, with a powerful ground attack and good defensive play, smothered the La Crosse State Teachers college Indians here last night, 20-0, on Gates field. It was the opener of the Northern division of the Teachers College conference. Paced by Henry Ertman, star halfback and pile--driving Dominic Moselle at fullback, the 'Jackets completely dominated the offensive play throughout the rain drenched contest. La Crosse didn't capitalize on one score chance all evening. Throughout the first quarter the game was played on even terms with neither team being able to get into scoring position. However, through an exchange of punts La Crosse was set back on its own 15. After driving to the Stout 40, Gould Nichols took matters into his own hands by pitching to Jim Nirschl, who was knocked out-of-bounds on the 25. On the next play, The Negaunee, Michigan lad passed to Cat Kalosh, who made a circus catch of the ball in the end zone for 6 points. Bill Meyers' attempt at placement was blocked. La Crosse-21. Milwaukee-12 tHomecorningl Milwaukee scored .early in the first period when Walt Fricke plunged into the end-zone from the one-yard line. Fr1cke's attempt was low. The Indians got back into the ball game mid-way thrcugh the second period, when Nichols flipped a 30-yard pass to Cat Kalosh, the West Mil- waukee giant. Kalosh trotted over unmolested to score. Automatic Bill Meyers' kick was perfect and La Crosse led as the half ended 7-6. The Gulls came back to score quickly in the third period when Leverson broke through to block Kaloshs punt on the 20-yard line. It took Ken Kranz, Green Gull halfback just two plays to drive over standing up and put his team out in front. Fricke's attempt was wide and the Mil- waukee Feds led 12-7. The Indians came right back to score after Bill Ott returned the kick-off to mid-field. Rog Nelson .and Nichols put together three first downs in a row to put the ball on the Milwaukee 13. At this point the Indian offense bogged down forcing Nick to step back on fourth down and flip a touchdown pass to Bob Bauer, Tomahawk right end. Automatic Bill Meyers' attempt was perfect and the Indians jumped back in the lead 14-12. The Indians scored again in the final canto after Fricke fumbled and Bill Ott recovered on the Gull 32. Nichols passed to Bauer, who was knocked off his feet attempting to catch the toss. Interference was ruled on the play and La Crosse took over on the 8-yard line. Russ Worth picked up a yard through the middle and on the next play Ott, with tremendous charge smashed his way over standing up with beautiful blocking ahead of him. The 'Ole Automatic booted perfectly to end the scoring for the afternoon. St. Norbert's-20. La Crosse-0 The Indians traveled cross state Saturday, October 26, and took it on the chin from a superior St. Norbert outfit, 210-0. The Green Knights pushed across on touchdowns in each of the first three periods, while their powerful forward wall stopped everything the Indians had to offer. The Maroon and Grey threatened early in the third period when Jim Bod-oh intercepted one of quarterback Klein's passes on the Knight 32. Two passes and a lateral gained to the 25, but on fourth down Rog Nelson was smothered by the Green Tide and St. Norbert took over on the 26. On the very next play the Knights fumbled and Bruiser Kalosh recovered on the 27. The threat ended two plays later when Nelson's attempted pass to Bauer was intercepted by Knight's captain Bucky Walters, who returned to his own 25-yard line. River Falls--13, La Crosse-9 The River Falls Falcons celebrated their 1946 homecoming festivities with a 13-9 hard fought victory over the La Crosse Indians this afternoon. Although outplayed, the Falcons struck like lightning in the first period to punch across two fast touchdowns and lead- the Indians at the quarter 13-0. La Crosse struck back in the second quarter. With the ball deep in Falcon territory, a bad pass from center forced halfback Tobias to go back into the end zone after a loose ball, Bob Bauer, La Crosse wingman, slashed in to dump him before he could run it out and the scoreboard showed: River Falls 13, La Crosse 2. The Indians scored again after the Falcons kicked out . Bob Dohr was the big gun in the attack, passing to perfection and running like a :cared rabbit. Successive passes to English, Bauer, and Nirschl put the ball down on River Falls' 4-yard line. Dohr slashed off tackle for the touch- down, and put La Crosse back in the ball game. Automatic Bill Meyers kicked the extra point and the scoreboard showed River Falls 13, La Crosse 9 as the half ended. Both teams battled through the second half with neither team being able to dent the scoring column. The Indians put on a drive late in the third quarter when Bob Bauer intercepted a Falcon pass and ran it down to the 30-yard line. Dohr and Bodoh sparked a concerted drive which drove to the one-yard line. On the first play the Indians fumbled and the Falcons took over on their three-yard line. Tobias punted out of danger and the Indians had lost their chance to pull the game out of the fire. La Crosse-8, Eau Claire-0 For the Indians, it was Jim Bodoh, the New London Howitzer, who was the outstanding man on the field. Bodoh, a tower of strength on defense, also bulled his way 65 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, only to have it nullified by an off-side penalty. Earlier in the game, Jim smashed his way over into pay-dirt from the five-yard line to put his team in front. Using the single-wing formation for the first time to perfection La Crosse Rang the Bell late in the first period, when Blackie Zimmerman, Watertown center, intercepted one of Cliff Washburn's passes and ran it all the way back to Eau Claire's 15. On the next play, Jim Nirschle, Milwaukee speedster, ran to the five, where he was bounced out of bounds. Bodoh shot into the end zone on the next play to put La Crosse in front 6-0. Bill Meyers' kick was wide of the up-rights and the Indians left the field at half-time sporting a 6-0 lead. Except for Bodoh's nullified run in the third period, the game see-sawed back and forth until mid-way through the fourth period, when Gould Nichols kicked beautifully out-of-bounds on the Tornadoes' 1-yard line. Eau Claire attempted to run the ball out on the first play, but Crash Stommel broke through to drop Toutant, Eau Claire halfback, in the end-zone. 71 -' H Leon Hanke 6 M ,M 1 Roger Nelson Phll Enghsh LeRoy Mielke of ff X W-5 , k Bob Bauer K' WWMW J ImZz'a1fzs vS.St. N ,. 1 i 5 2 V Q . ,.
