Directed by Miss Grace Walsh who has charge of .the intercollegiate speech activities, our squad has had an unusually successful and enjoyable year in a wide variety of activities. The speakers participated in six tournaments and played host to fifty-four school teams for whom they sponsored a tournament. First was the ‘Transition to Peace conference at the University of Iowa on December (i and 7. Debaters Hob Skouge and Don Kauffman debating on the proposition that labor should be given a direct share in tin management of industry, lost only one debate. That record was duplicated by the universities of Kansas. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa and Northwestern and a six-way tie for first place was awarded. Hob Mittel-stadt. Hob Couture and K xl McPhee represented us in discussions based on American relations with Russia. McPhee was cited for excellence in this event, while Couture placed third in the finals in after-dinner speaking against competition from 23 colleges and universities. Next came the high school debate tourney on January II. It was the third annual and the biggest one yet. Fifty-four teams representing 2S schools attended. On February 6 and 7, at the Annual Red River Valley tournament, debate squad president. Hob Skouge, won the championship title in extempore speaking, while Hob Couture took third in oratory. Our own third annual speech tournament was attended by 4 S teams in debate, 22 discussion speakers and 35 entered in individual events whieh included oratory, extempore and after-dinner speaking. The McPhee-Skouge debate team won four out of five debates; Donn Kauffman and Sam Koski were two of the five speakers placed on the all tournament discussion team; and Hob Skouge and Hob Couture won the championship in extempore sjx aking and oratory respectively. On March 22 six colleges attended the River Falls tournament. Lois Larson, Donn Kauffman and Hob Couture won place's on the all tournament team of six speakers. Kauffman and Couture were the high point team of the tournament, while Lois Larson and Joan Hardy tied with River Falls for second. The competitive season ended with the Freshman tournament at the University of Minnesota on April 11 and 12. Twelve colleges and universities attended. Our freshmen won five debates and McPhee climaxed the season by receiving the engraved gold medal given to the student who was judged the single best debater through the two days of competition.
