THE 1944 PERISCOPE Volume XXVII Eau Claire State Teachers' College Eau Claire, Wisconsin ALMA MATER The schools arc many in our state, And colleges not a few, But there arc none can hope to rate. Our college dear, with you! The Chippewa Biver pays thee homage, Bowing low before thy feet; And the scenes they stir our heartbeat Which the trees, the bluff, the meadows make complete. And we, thy loyal sons and daughters. Our love and fealty will swear To thee, our Alma Mater, thou College of Eau Claire. Three 19 4 4 PERISCOPE FOREWORD j Like its prototype of a little more than a quarter of a century ago, the 1944 Periscope is a war-time volume. Again the young men — and in this war, many of the young women, too — of Eau Claire State Teachers’ College have been called to the colors, this time to he involved in the tridy world-enveloping holocaust of war. To all of them, but especially to those who have given their lives, it is fitting that we pay homage in this record of the college during 1943-1944. Though they are scattered from Iceland to Australia and from the Aleutians to North Africa, their thoughts often turn to their Alma Mater and the scenes of their student days. It remains the obligation, therefore, of us left at home to “carry on” in the fullest sense of that phrase, and that is what all of us — students and faculty alike — have sought to do this year. . . . grates pcrsolvere dignas Non opis est nostrae. ...” — Vergil. 19 4 4 PERISCOPE Four ¥ ★ ★ The 1944 Periscope is DEDICATED to the memory of the fallen . . . We cat! Thirteen 1944 PERISCOPE This has been an interesting but difficult college year. The army program has brought interesting challenges to us, but has made necessary many readjustments to both students and faculty. Confidently we are looking forward to the post-war period with its promise of great building years for the college, but we shall not forget the interesting but hectic days of 1943 and 1944. You can best serve your college by keeping at high pitch your own enthusiasm for the Eau Claire State Teachers' College. Students who have been here write that they did not appreciate the good things we have until they had gone elsewhere. A new day for the college is dawning —will you be ready to play your part in its future? Will you recognize and appreciate the fine things at Eau Claire while you arc enjoying them? Will you pledge your personal loyalty to your Alma Mater? CW. 31. S)avies President. 19 4 4 PERISCOPE Fourteen A. J. FOX W. L. ZORN LAURA E. I lorn back THE PERISCOPE Faced with difficulties in obtaining paper, cover materials, films, and flash bulbs, the 1944 Periscope staff feels fortunate in having been able to bring its efforts to fruition. Wholly aside from the effects of reduced enrollment and the subsequent curtailment of many activities, the size of this volume has been affected by two WPB rulings: the ban on the use of anything heavier than 70-pound paper (the 1943 edition was printed on 100-pound paper), and a twenty-five per cent, reduction in the number of pages. And not the least of the obstacles encountered was that created by the manpower shortage, felt by staff, printers, engravers, binders, and cover manufacturers alike. ★ ★ ★ THE SPECTATOR The streamlined 1943-1944 Sf ectator, of which a composite facsimile in miniature is to be seen on the opposite page, made the following contributions to the war effort: Over five hundred copies of each issue were sent via first-class mail to former students and alumni now in the armed services, the entire cost ln-ing borne by the Spectator (addressing done voluntarily by Mrs. Wing). Page 4 was turned over to the 301st College Training Detachment (Aircrew) for its “Prop Wash” and copies were furnished free to the entire detachment. In addition to staff members listed above, the following assisted with the publication: Mardell Wetzel, Eileen Kuehn. Joanne Cronk. Hannah Dess'itz, Ethel Mae Kohlhcpp. Beatrice Peck.
