Barne Wackman at the 1952 Founder ' s Day banquet. J. Da In large measure, the stiength of the University of Wisconsin is dependent upon forces operating outside the campus at Madison. Whether these forces are favorable or unfavorable depends, in turn, upon the alumni of the Uni- versity. These alumni are the University ' s ambassadors. Better than any other group or organization, thev can disseminate information about the ideas of research, education and public service that come out from the Madison campus. To do this )ob effectively, they must iirst be informed about the University, its problems and achievements. Secondly, they must have contact with other Badger alumni so that a cooperative effort can be made. It is based on these facts that the work of the Wisconsin Alumni Associa- tion is based. The Association ' s motto is to promote, by organized effort, the best interests of the University of Wisconsin. Each year thousands of pieces of mail go out from the Association offices to the some 20,000 alumni members. Principal among these are the Wisconsin Alumnus, monthly magazine; The Wisconsin Football Letter; the Badger Report, which serves as a University newspaper; the Cardinal Communique, which concentrates on budget news and similar UW problems; and News- letters, publications which provide late news. Each year the Association elects a new president and some new members for its board of directors. The president this year is Willard Aschenbrener of Racine, Wis., who works with the directors in settling Association policy. John Berge, Association executive secretary, serves as the main link between alumni, alumni clubs and the University administration. 27
