Seniors Leave an Improved Graduates of the Class ot 1952 at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin have attended the school during an unusual four years of building activir . When today ' s graduatinsr seniors entered Wis- consin as 1948 ' s freshmen they began their college days on the threshold of the post World War II long range building program of the University. During the succeeding four years this program has resulted in the construction of many new campus facilities. The new facilities of this progiam when cou- pled with completed future plans will result in greater means for building stronger minds and bodies among coming Wisconsin students. Stu- dents do not work alone but are greatly dependent upon the physical means at their disposal. New classrooms, graduate buildings, laboratories, and departmental additions will provide the equip- ment necessary for more effective and purposeful study. Even though enrollment is expected to decrease somewhat in the immediate period new construction will nevertheless accentuate these benefits. What the Class of 1952 has wiriiessed in campus construction presents a recoid the ' can look upon with admiration. Seniors can take pride in the improved and expanded univcrsir from which they are graduating. Alumni and graduate work has been exten- sively aided through recent building. In 1948 the $650,000 Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation headquarters was completed. This building of that famous Foundation furnishes the space for carrying out a greater program of WARF work. The Enzyme Institute, completed in 1949, was the second structure that the Class of 1952 viewed as part of the coming expansion. This unique building, the only one of its kind in the country, provided a place for enzyme research on graduate and post-graduate levels. The following year the Knapp Memorial Graduate Center was converted from the old governor ' s mansion on Gilman Street. Babcock Hall, a dairy and food technology center, followed in 1951- These notable construc- tions may well provide the means for successful graduate study bv many oi ' 52 ' s seniors.

and Expanded Wisconsin Of direct benefit to present students have been new classroom and stadium developments. In the new Engineering Building ' s well lighted and spacious rooms many cla sses arc now held. This building was finished at Camp Randall in 1951. Seniors and students have also had a chance to see the new 8,000 seat addition to Camp Randall Stadium in use during the 1951 gridiron season. While these directly student used structures have been built, important additions to the Wis- consin General Hospital have also occurred. New wings to the hospital were completed in 1952, and a $538,000 hospital remodelling program is now in operation. A related constructit:)n to Wis- consin General is the Intern Residents Dormitory hich is now rising near the hospital to supply needed living quarters for interns. A one and one half million dollar Hygiene Laboratory paid for bv the Stare Department of Health is being con- structed on Linden Drive. The imposing Veteran ' s Administration Hospital on the far west end of the Lhiiversitv was completed in 1951. These buildings are examples of state and federal funds employed in financing campus building. Also under construction at present on the cam- pus is the familiar Memorial Library on the lower campus, a Chemical-Engineering Building at Camp llandall, and a new Home Economics Wing. With the completion of these projects in the near future a long stride will have been taken in meeting expanded student needs. From the construction of the WARP Head- quarters to the completion of additions to the Wisconsin General Hospital, the University long range building program has firmly established itself. What building ' 52 ' s class has seen will undoubtedly be seen in other forms by succeeding classes if present plans are realized. What will eventually result from all this building will be a much enhanced L niversity of Wisconsin well equipped to plav the leading role it always has in the development of better minds among its students. The Class of 1952 has been fortunate to see the beginnings of the building program and to share in some of its benefits. h: ' mM cm w
