In a Badger devoted to the beauty of the Wisconsin campus, I want to add a arship of Wisconsin. Bricks and mortar may build a campus, but only teachers and students can build a uni- versity. Behind the University of Wisconsin is a heritage of great scholarship; before it, the prospect of a chal- lenging future. Wisconsin, on the eve of its Centennial, gathers strength from its worthy past for a relcnt- search for ways it may better serve in its second century. —President E. B. Fred

I lat 8:50 hike from Science Hall ' way out to Temporary 16 on a sub-zero January morning was a cold affair, and possibly we overlooked the scenery; but in retrospect we see the Hiram Smith dairy building trying not to shiver under a blanket of snow fringed with icicles. Cars coughed a bit, but rallied faithfully; and ruddy-faced students on foot braved winter winds and the even frostier prospect of impending exams. 13

' As an alumnus of the University I deeply appreciate the significance of our Alma Mater ' s coming Centennial. While occupying the Governor ' s chair I have had many occasions to observe that the history of the State anil the University are inextricably woven together. We have set a laudatory example of state university and state gov- ernment cooperating in the interest of all our people. Through research, teaching, and public service, the boundaries of the University campus have truly become co- extensive with the boundaries of the State. — Governor Oscar Rennebohm
