lief against the white background of snow - blanketed roads which wind toward Bascom Hall and Lake Men- dota. Winter scenes like these show why Wisconsin is famed for her beautiful grounds. Lovely in every season, the campus becomes a study of pictur- es jue contrasts after January snows. A lacy network of branches is silhou- etted against hazy skies, while the more energetic students revel in snowball fights, or build gigantic snowmen to rule over their crystal- line kingdoms. 12

As we stand in a tower overlook- ing the quiet waters of Mendota at sunset, we see sailboats moored oft the piers at the Memorial Union. Regattas are a favorite summer sport for Wisconsin students. •v ' • ■•■•.. Wingra is a lake often frequented by fishermen, where the locks form small pools ideal for panfish. I lat 8:50 hike from Science Hall ' way out to Temporary 16 on a sub-zero January morning was a cold affair, and possibly we overlooked the scenery; but in retrospect we see the Hiram Smith dairy building trying not to shiver under a blanket of snow fringed with icicles. Cars coughed a bit, but rallied faithfully; and ruddy-faced students on foot braved winter winds and the even frostier prospect of impending exams. 13
